Most cameras are controlled by the DVR. The DVR settings allows the recording to be stored only once motion has been recorded. You may find a camera that just does that but I don't know of one myself.

Having spent some time researching cameras there are vast differences between the ones offered. A cheap camera is exactly that, if ? used to try and scare people off it may be useful. However if you are going to spend time and money installing them, and them having some picture quality that is useful, you need to spend more money. The order of the day currently is you should be looking at least 4 megapixel cameras, preferably with POE ( power over ethernet) which is supplied by the Network Vision Recorder, which is fitted with a surveillance hard disk to ensure any pictures stay there in the interim and the hard disk does not stop working if a normal computer hard disk is used. ( Many stores will sell you the normal hard disk unless you enquire). There are a couple of main brands that are the ? Holdens/ Toyotas of the world that fit the bill for being reliable, have numerous knowledge bases on the internet and are easier to set up and will keep working and are a reasonable cost. Most camera places will always usually insist you have them hard wired, ( wireless systems around, can be prone to interference, and can lend themselves to being hacked,( i.e. people may even be looking at you, and not always you looking out for them) or even interfered with to stop them working. With regards to setting them up, if you are trying to have a camera look out longer, then usually the field of view is smaller, if you have a bigger field of view, then their ability for distance is reduced.It is important for cameras to have some good infrared capabilities, the better cameras will see just as well in the dark, but will show as black and white. There is usually no difference from day or night other than the colour. I utilise 6x 4mp Dahua with POE NVR, with 4 terrabyte hard disk. If you buy cameras with same name of the internet, unless you specifically know what you are buying they may work, however, once first upgrade may then have all menus revert to chinese/ not english reading menus. ( This titbit of information was supplied to me a number of times from differing camera retailers).The ones I use have full-time recording, and/ or motion sensor capabilities where you map out what you would like recorded, ( and not just have all your trees in the back yard showing recordings of your yard without anybody being there). I hope this adds to the subject of people considering same, and such is only an opinion, others will have others that may be more useful. My cameras work, sent pictures to the iPhone, and as such can be used to view my property anywhere in the world. ( Ps the cost is long forgotten, whilst the quality remains, and they keep working so when you need to view something on them) Regards Wes
