Greetings,

OMG! Soil maps? This “cracking good discussion” is cracking me up. I am in tears!

“Raider of the lost arc”? How does Bozo dream this stuff up? The “Vaporetti” did me in the second time around. I was thinking “Puffing Billy” but there is something very Veneto about the Vaporetto Road to Greenhills…

Bozo wins.

I will however return with an expansive and lifting thought in respect to montmorillonite and bentonite…

Knowing the importance of BIG Data in a world of digital disruption, I thought details of my 'very slow speed off' might help you Raider i.e. 800 metres west of the junction of Sandgate Road and Great Southern Highway in the locale of Gilgering.

JP. Just had a look at the MotoWinch. Looks good. Here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3gUZkSPayIU I want one. Would have been very useful at the Vaporetto Road, Morbinning Cassius Marcellus Duplex, clay site IF I also carried an axe and a shovel.

The alternative would be to carry some sealed bags of anhydrous Montmorillon clay from the Vienne department, near to where Vaporetti ply. If, however, you are located in the USA, preferably Montana, you could carry some bags of anhydrous Fort Benton clay, home of the Rocky Mountain Oyster - just like a chicken McNugget, only much, much more masculine.

At the Vaporetto Road, More-binning Cassius Marcellus Duplex, clay site, the plan could have been to stack said anhydrous bags under cylinder head, using the MotoWinch and shovel to assist. Then just add water or urina - if suitable hose is to-hand. Ecco! Watch in amazement as the bike rises to the swelling smectite.

Gilgering?

My money is on the Red Morrel being the appropriate tree for Raider.

The original vegetation comprises open woodland predominantly consisting of wandoo but also containing jam, tamma, and rock sheoak. Salmon gums and red morrel can occur on mafic areas.

The said Red Morrel is very dense and would be an appropriate tool for the said recovery.
Also in the case of an unsuccessful recovery it burns very well and leaves very little ash behind to facilitate a quick and easy clean up of the scene!!!!
Red Morrel "Uses have included agricultural and wheelwright purposes, mining timber and fuelwood. The timber has considerable potential for furniture manufacture." (Ref FPC, http://www.fpc.wa.gov.au/node/916)
Overall I think JP has definitely recommend the correct solution for the problem at hand given Raiders background and skill set, make another wheel or two, undermine the current wheels to correct the situation or use the fuelwood, or makes some furniture to contemplate the predicament.

Terrific update on soil types and flora and thanks for the inputs Spenco. Aim is secure exact flora species by Friday.

We now have three confirmed order for the Moto Winch. Will get exact price once numbers are confirmed as it will likely impact on the shipping costs.

As you say Spenco, a very uplifting discussion.

I misunderstood your location of your off and thought it was in the Morbinning soil landscape but it is right in the middle of the Jelcobine complex. Your Africano Gemello incident is therefore not linked to the Vaporetto cruise termination.

In the Jelcobine complex vehicles are coated with a shiny smooth material and take on the appearance of polished fibreglass.

Morbinning produces a more aphanitic surface.

Thank you for your expansive response that has slaked my anhydrous state. I think we now have all had our phyll of silicate discussions. We need to move to the isomorphous substitution of another topic.

Raider has come to the party with requested geology, and notably the GS was righted without the use of aluminium extension poles and snatch straps!

After reading through all this BS...
I have the winch system. Yes it works in 99% of situations.
A helping hand can be had by stopping in at yacht grot and getting some high quality pulls and thin rope to use to relocate the bike using a tree.

If you want light weight rope that does not take up much room and is strong, get a length of dyneema boat winch rope, 5mm x 7m at BCF $28, rated to 700kg.
Can use as tow rope

I have outlaid $20 and got a 350kg rated ratchet strap and ratchet that would have made my recent recovery simpler and safer. As it has hooks I have also added a pair of soft looped straps. It will also help to pull the bike backwards when turning around in sand.

Greetings,

Damn, I am not getting any younger or better at riding off beaten tracks… Still find myself crashing the BMW GSA and the DR650 out in the bush. Need some help to pick the beasts up. The Eastbound MotoWinch may be the answer. Decided to order one along with some other stuff that can be swapped into action. When the package arrives from The Netherlands I will head to Catelano’s for a show and tell… Thanks JP. A good call.

Dyneema or Spectra - different brand names for the same product. Same type of plastic used in those MULTIPLE use grey plastic bags that have been banned here in WA. Very tough stuff - not elastic. Can get it sheathed or NAKED. The latter takes up much less space in your kit…
