New Year's Resolution
Re: New Year's Resolution
Hi Folks,
Cycle touring the Philippines continues...
In this Vid I wake sore and sorry after crashing and breaking ribs. I cross the Island of Negros by Coach and take a Ferry ride to Siquijor, locally known as the ‘Healing Island’. How appropriate. I tour the island (by Scooter and bicycle) and find postcard worthy beaches and natural waterfalls. I decide to stay on the Island longer than anticipated and start my healing process.
Grab ya gear; Lets go!

Steve
Thanks for sharing the highs and lows of your trip and capturing the great diversity of the Philippines.
Fascinating and enjoyable as usual with all the challenges and surprises of being a free itinerary tourist.

G’Day Slackers,
Myself and a large group (18 Vehicles) from the Wanneroo Wanderers 4WD Club are leaving on Thursday 6 Apr for a 10 day run thru parts of WA. We head for Laverton before picking up the Lake Rason Track, head south to Kitchener on the Trans Aust Railway Line and then head further south to Balladonia. From there we head toward the Great Australian Bight east of Esperance where we’ll park up for a couple of days. From there we head west toward Esperance via Israelite Bay.
I'll be joined by His Royal Griceness.
SPOT Tracker activated from Thursday 6 Apr at the meet up point, The Lakes Roadhouse. SPOT Link is here;

Looks like a traffic jam out there mate. I think I would check Google to see how the congestion is prior to setting out.

Ho, Ho, Ho,
Great Australian Bight Road Trip.
Update Day Two.
Currently at Kalgoorlie…somebody’s Easter is ruined (not part of our group). Be careful out there…it’s a War Zone.
See captions below.
Campsite under moonlight. Bushcamp 400km east of Perth.
First on scene. Unsafe overtaking manoeuvre trying to overtake a road train.
Tried to overtake, thought twice about it, tried to pull back into lane, started fishtailing.
No injuries. Used our Sat Phone to call emergency services.

A timely reminder. Good to have the device when you need it. Travel safe lads.
Re: New Year's Resolution
Hello Slackers,
Great Australian Bight Road Trip.
Update Day 7.
We have covered a lot of territory since the last update. Slow going on the Lake Rason Track with a few dramas along the way. Punctured tyres (2) that were damaged beyond repair and an electrical issue with one vehicle that was enough to set us behind schedule. The final straw was a closed road (Zanthus to Balladonia) which has caused us to change plans and find alternative routes to the coast.
We are currently bush camped south of Kal heading for the coast south west of Esperance (I think).
See captions below.
Came across an old Pioneer Cemetery….gives you an insight into the harsh lifestyle of a bygone era.
Graves of the deceased each with their own story to tell.
This was a common theme. There were several graves marked as suicide by gelignite. It seemed a bit odd to me.
Tiger Trap Gully on Lake Rason Track. Any excuse to get out of the vehicle and have a look around.
Electrical fault on a Hilux. No power windows, air conditioning or ABS. It took several hours to bypass circuitry and repair the fault. In the end, we discovered it was a simple case of blown fuses.
Thorny Devil in his natural environment.
Electric portable chainsaws make the job of getting firewood easy.
The Shooters Shack overlooking Lake Rason. Built by shooting fanatics who allow visitors to use the facilities.
Harsh environment out here.
Torn sidewall. The tyre could not be repaired.
Breaking the bead using improvised techniques. We found a usable 17 inch tyre on the side of the road ‘just in case’.
The end of the Cut Road where it joins the Trans Cont Railway Track. We head west toward Kalgoorlie.
The Cut Road is used by an isolated Aboriginal Community.
We’ve done a big loop. We head south west from Kal toward the coast.

And I would also like to inform you that you will be limited in your entertainment on the road, apart from your friends, of course. In your moments of rest and overnight stays you will be able to play at online casinos that accept payment by phone, here is the link. Put the essentials in your backpack, and be sure to have your phone. Where else are you going to play in a casino like this?
See you on the other side.

Hello Schmo's
Ridge Rider 3 – Toowoomba to Townsville – 30 Apr to 5 May
I wasn’t sure how I was going to be employed as a volunteer on the Support Staff to run this trip. 170 Riders with all makes, all models and 170 different levels of experience. What could possibly go wrong.
See captions below.
It takes a lot of Staff to keep this show on the road with so many moving parts. It works out that I was to be Jay’s (the Organiser) right hand man…I even had a different colour Vest so I stood out in the crowd.
Tyre changing prior to the Event and scrutineering to ensure the bikes are up to the task.
Moto Trekkin are completely self-sufficient and can operate off the grid where necessary.
Breakfast on Day One so Riders don’t have to scour the city looking for food to allow a smooth transition into the Ride.
Riders waiting for the start of Day One. The Riders are given a window to leave, usually between 7.00AM to 8.30AM.
The Riders use an App called GAIA (Pronounced Guyer) to navigate. Each day’s route is downloaded the night before. Each day there are ‘break out routes’ of differing difficulty to challenge those Riders who want to be stretched and get out of their comfort zone.
The break out routes have four different gradings with the Black break out only for the most experienced.
One Rider took the wrong line and overcooked a corner. His bike had to be recovered by winch fitted to a Support Vehicle.
His crash resulted in a badly broken leg. His Ride was over. We have a Paramedic who travels in a Support Vehicle to provide immediate first aid. An Ambulance was called to transport this Rider to Hospital.
Each Rider is checked in at end of day…no man (or woman) is left behind!
Some bikes were damaged but only because Riders did not ride according to the conditions. Dented rims were common place on many bikes.
All the Support Staff worked like Dogs to keep the Riders on the road…the Show Must Go On!
One Rider had starter motor problems…we tried to push start the bike to keep him on the road.
That failed so we had to get creative…using a Support Vehicle to bump start the bike using a tow rope. It can be risky and should only be attempted by those with a certain skill set.
I saw some photos of what I was missing out on by not attending as a participant…it made me sad!
We had time to do a tour of the Bundaberg Rum Distillery. An interesting history.
On the Fourth day, one Rider took the wrong line and got all crossed up in some sand.
He broke 4 ribs and broke his collarbone. Broken collarbones are a standard injury for a lot of Adv Riders caused by trying to break their fall with an outstretched arm. He was taken to Mackay Base Hospital by Ambulance.
The long 3 day road drive back to Moto Trekkin HQ near Newcaslte, NSW.
We had motorbikes to deliver en route and spent one night at Broadbeach on the Gold Coast.
Final unpacking and unloading at Moto Trekkin HQ.
As a group, the Riders covered over 450,000km so it’s no wonder we had a few ‘offs’ and some injuries. 6 did not finish but that is to be expected with such a large group of riders while traversing some difficult terrain in some cases. Providing support to an Event such as this as Crew proved to be a tough gig; long days, little sleep and constantly on the go. The only reward was the smiles on the faces of the participants and the positive feedback after the finish. A lot of the Riders (over 100) were repeat customers so Jay and his Team must be doin’ something right.
See you on the other side!
