It was interesting watching the news tonight to see that a woman lost on the Bibblemun Track last night was rescued today after activating the Spot GPS she was carrying.

I am aware many Club members own these devices and carry them when Off Road riding, A sensible precaution.

However, Would a Spot GPS be any use to those of us riders,who do not venture Off Road as we are less likely too possibly get lost :?: :?: :?:

Although I think Davey, Alias "Sprocket Man", Alias "Disability Dave" may wish me otherwise at this point of time? :lol:

Your thoughts on this matter would be appreciated.

She wasn't lost...she took a tumble and injured herself. She lay unconcious for 2 hours and when she did come too, she was disorientated. In this case, the SPOT paid for itself. There would not be too many other brave souls on the Bibbulmun Track in those conditions (rain/hail). The SPOT would save your bacon in any area where you do not have mobile coverage, whether you are on the bitumen or in the outback. One lucky lady!!

Or laying in a ditch beside a good road, with a bike on top of you. You can run off any road and some club members have.....

Great value and peace of mind for those at home. A few trail riders around Perth in recent time would have survived or found earlier if they had one.

Hello Swampy

If you ride in a group I.E. 2 or more riders, the odds of all riders being injured or broken down are very slim, if on the other hand you plan on riding alone the Spot could be a very useful device.

The spot is also useful for family tracking you, without you needing to call in or send messages, I run the track facility on most rides - if for some reason I did not arrive at designated time my family would check Spot to see where the signal stopped or is stationary and start looking there.

You can review your route via the website when you return and save for future reference.

Thanks to all for your feedback on the Spot GPS. Apologies to Steve, Yes I did report the incident about the lady on the Bibblemun incorrectly. :oops:

Feedback from all was interesting and relevent enough for me to consider purchasing one as I do a lot of Solo riding.

Suggestions on the best place to purchase one, Price and ongoing costs would be appreciated also?

Can somebody recommend a dealer who sells the latest model in the Perth area AND can explain its features. What it can do and how it works and what it's limitations are?

I bought mine online from US. It turned out to be one of a faulty batch, identifiable by the serial number, the vendor pleaded innocence and I had to go through the warranty process with Spot, who recognised the problem and sent a replacement.
But still a pain in the arse and I was without a Spot (Spotless?) for too long.
Probably worth the extra for local support.


Lots of info and varying opinions on Advrider.

There is a place in Osborne Pk. Just cant remember name yet, but with time it will come to me. Its an Age thing. :P

I got mine from a satelite comms bunch in Balcatta.....at least my wife did.

By the way if you have an Apple iphone consider the Spot connect....lets you send SMS style messages via satelite. The regular Spot limits you to messages set up beforehand.

David Fox-Spencer has the Spot Connect....ask him about it.
