R50 Earls front shocks

Post by Richard Hughes »

Well Ev's a proud new owner of a 56 r 50, the only thing is the front shocks are completely US
It's like riding a clown bike bouncing up and down.
Been quoted on new dampers but after purchase and transport, a further $550 is a bit hard to part with.
Does anyone know of a cheaper way out ie after market or equivalent shocks we can put on?
Thanks in advance
Richard
Oh yeh it's got an Earls front end on it

Richard, You could try Vech at Benchmarkworks. They do a Boge copy which works well. If you order a front pair, get a back pair as well, for me and we can split the postage. Email vech at vech@benchmarkworks.com. He's in America.

Cheers

Thanks John, have sent them an e mail so I'll keep you posted, had another quote from Hagan shocks in uk, $230 a pair, so we will see who wins, what do you think about converting an r50 over to 12 volt with electronic ignition?
I know your a purist but the little lady's finding it hard to kick over, plus the 6 volt generator isn't working at the moment?

Yes, Richard, go for it. In terms of the generator, you may need new brushes (they cost less than $10 at Munichs) as they are very soft. I ride with my lights off at daytime and it gives the genny a chance to fully charge the battery. Also, with your current system, you don't need any charge in your battery to start, the magneto delivers the spark from being spun, on kicking. The poor starting must be related to poor timing, shitty plugs or badly set carbs (or your magneto's coil could be packing up). Vince is really good at tuning these oldies, if you struggle. I can start mine with my left arm. John

Ok John, give me a call next week and I'll organize the shocks, I'm going to try points plugs and condenser , the mechanical advance was sticking so after I fixed that it does seem better but still not easy, I'll keep trying but Vince might be the solution
