At tonight's talk mention was made of the three Aussies that finished the Dakar in 2014.

I was fortunate to meet one of them at a the recent Flinders Classic VII ADV meet two weekends ago (that's another story). Allan Roberts sat next to me on the bus to the local pub and I commented on his faded Dakar shirt - thinking perhaps he was a spectator or perhaps a mechanic! he told me he rode the race and one of his mates said - yes and he finished 39th! Totally self funded some $120,000 later - he said he is now pretty broke.

Allan rode around the world in a period of over five years and his book "The Hard Way Home" is about some of the adventures he had in his travels as he rode through some of the toughest places on earth - 100,000 km, 59 countries, four continents and three bikes...and how he got to be inspired to ride the Dakar. Now I have to admit to having read a lot of adventure motorcycle books and can highly recommend his book. I also think that we should support Allan by buying his book and its available from his web site for $30.00
