It is a horrible road...this may improve road conditions somewhat.

The route for this gas pipeline was surveyed a few years ago. The Tanami Road can be closed for long durations (30-60 days in some instances) during the wet season and hence vital supplies ie: diesel, food, spares can not be delivered to the minesite which in turn forces the mine to shutdown or at least partially shutdown. This necessitated the requirement for an alternate power source, hence the gas pipeline. The Granites Minesite if 550k by road from Alice Springs, of which ~250k is gravel.
