Posting Photos

Members have started to attach photos. There's only a few, but soon that will become many, and then we'll run out of our limited web hosting space.

I set a very low limit for available space set aside for attachments, and we have reached that already with all the Camp Cookoff photos (if you try to attach a photo now an error message comes up “the board attachment quota has been reached”).

There are online photo hosting services such as Smugmug and Photobucket and many ISP's give you a storage allowance.

If you use one of these services and insert a link instead of attaching a photo, there is no limit to the photo's we can display on the forum.

More info for those who have asked 'how'...

You'll need to open or create an account with your preferred online photo hosting service provider. I use Photobucket. It's free but has some limitations, none of which have been an issue for a low volume user like me.

The info below relates to Photobucket but most providers operate in a similar way.

1. Open an account

2. You will have a 'Library' in your account

3. Within your Library, you can create and name Albums

4. Within an Album, you can create and name Sub Albums

IMPORTANT - a unique link is created for each photo based on whichever album or sub album you upload it to. If you shift your photo to another album or sub album AFTER you have posted the photo in a thread, the link is broken and no image will be displayed in the thread.

5. Begin by deciding how your Album structure should look. Eg, you may opt for something like this BIKES (Album) > R1200GS (sub album). RIDES (Album) > BORDER RUN 2013 (sub album). etc. Whatever suits you.

Uploading a photo
6. Know where the photo is stored on your PC. In Photobucket, click on Upload.

7. Click the down arrow to select the destination Album or Sub Album for the photo. The sub album shown below is 'HP2 Enduro'
Image

8. Click 'Choose Photos & Videos'. Find the photo on your PC, select it (ie click once) and click 'Open' on the PC window. The photo will commence uploading automatically.

9. After a short while uploading will finish (depending on file size and connection speed)

Posting a photo. (there are other ways but start out using this method)
10. Find your photo in Photobucket

11. Click on its thumbnail image

12. To the right of the photo, there is a pane of Links. Select 'Direct'.

13. The Link line will temporarily change to say 'Copied'

14. On this forum, under 'Post Reply', find the button 'Img' and click on it. (Tip - make sure each photo is inserted on a new line). The cursor will be between the sets of square brackets.

15. Press Ctrl + V on your keyboard. Your Photobucket link will be inserted.

16. Click preview. Voila, one photo inserted and displaying.

Hope this helps. Let me know if any edits or clarification is required.

Shane,
that's excellent work. I'm sure many will read and have a crack at it. I for one will give it a go, and hopefully start to post some really interesting trip reports/ articles and "how to's.

Thanks for the tip.
Cheers

Is it possible to get more data hosting space?

My iphone 6 plus can hold 19000 full res photos.

It would be great if things have changed in the last 7 years and the space is more affordable now.

Just sayin Folks. Maybe worth a look by some IT savy types.

Is this Thread current??? Originally, we were restricted by 'limited web hosting space'. I notice that Spacey has developed a way to embed video links (as opposed to posting the links only). I'm not sure if that impacts on the web hosting space. Photobucket is now old hat cause nothin' comes for free and most blokes have moved on. Can we embed photos and video links or do we need to continue posting the links only??? I'm only a simple bloke so make any response easy to understand.
:P

PhotoBucket https://photobucket.com/ features a free hosting service at: https://photobucket.com/photo-hosting/

The free link is near the bottom of the page...

This should make it easier for members to upload images to the forum 8)

Get a DropBox account.

Upload your photos to DropBox.

'Copy shared link'

This should look something like this example:

Code: Select all

https://www.dropbox.com/s/ax72bgk7jytqwud/brakeDiscs_04.jpg?dl=0
From the above string, copy this part:

Code: Select all

s/ax72bgk7jytqwud/brakeDiscs_04.jpg?dl=0

Then copy and paste it into the following string, then paste this into your post.

Code: Select all

Which should then look like this...
