Hi

I bought 2005 R1150 R this week to "supplement" [read 1987 K75 needs major attention] as I ride about 500-800 km's every week. The bike has only 29k km's on.

Any comments about the good, the bad & the ugly please....

Wasn't really in the market but I need a reliable and safe bike weekly. I have a car, but who want's to do that.... The K need brakes overhauled, some leaks fixed and the lighting need a lot to be desired. I typically return home after 3 days at work in the twilight / dark.

After the test ride on the 1150 I was impressed with the power, 6th gear, instruments that all work. Getting back on the K home I was again very impressed with the 34 year old K75, nimble great steering, light [actually heavier the 1150, but feels lighter].

I'll fix up the K and then decide which one to keep. Will be a tough decision.

Koos

Hi Koos the ABS units can be a problem some have problems my 1150 had the unit removed and just went back to standed non ABS brakes in WA it’s ok don’t know in other places. The unit is f#—n expensive and carry a spare plug coil cap, other than that there good bikes

Thank Goldy, appreciate you comments. I did travel to Brissy and back this week for three days and enjoyed the bike. Will get bar risers that also move the handlebars back a bit, a larger screen and maybe lower pegs but apart from that it is nice.

Have already got a 52L top box and it came with spotless BMW panniers....

Enjoy the ride Koos. They ride and handle well. A couple of things when removing the coil caps of the plugs make sure you unclip the power cable of the plug cap and get the rear drive shaft splines serviced. You need a tool to remove the caps of the plugs

Howdy Koos,

Haha! Your new twin-spark boxer is still in the break-in period. Should be good after about 50,000 km. Change the rear wheel bearing at about 85,000 km and the shocks (standard replacement) about then too...

Repeat every 85,000 km and your 1150 should be trouble-free. However, the odometer might fail after about 350,000 km - watch out for that one...

I have its 2003 GSA relative with just under half a million kilometres on the (second) clock - currently on display at Auto Classic. Could jump on the old beast tomorrow and ride trouble-free around Australia. Oh yes, don't forget to feed it good tyres. A round-Australia trip on the GSA would eat three sets of the block-tread Twinduros but would let you take the back-roads.

Cheers,
Raider

Hi Robin

Thank you for the advice. I know your bike and have mentioned it to several people, including the Yamaha salesman where I bought this one. They got it as a trade in and clearly didn't do any research.

Yes, I got lucky with this one.....clean living, as my dad would say. I think my K's are usually only run in around 100k k's.

I will still keep a look out for a low k 1150 GS and jump if one pops up, but very happy with this one.
