Newbie ... sort of

Hello all, just joined the forum but don't own a BMW (yet).

We (FBH n me) are looking at going across Australia later this year and need a good tourer. I've been told the R1200RT is a top bike.
I'm looking at 30k+ (ouch!) for a new one but have seen some ex-police bikes out of Victoria for a lot less.
Kms are around 50k and I'm sure it's a "depends" basis but any thoughts on these ex-police bikes? I'm assuming all services have been done and possibly a crash or two.

Brief bio on me:

Been on bikes for only 3 years. It probably WAS a midlife crisis but I now have a bike so, crisis averted :)
Work in the corporate arena (HR - sorry!)
Married with two Gen "whys?" kids

Oh, FBH stands for Far Better Half (I know my place in the world!)

Regards

Bill

Hi welcome to the forum. the RT is a great bike ( I heard a rumour that there may be one coming up for sale)

The Lt is also an awsome touring bike with more comfort for rider and pillion but they are a big bike whilst standing still, but very mobile and nimble once rolling. A new one of these might be out of your price range but 2nd hand ones do come up for $15 - $25k, great bikes.

Thanks Bully1

I'm off to AutoClassic tomorrow to have a look at an 06 model of the RT. And plan a ride for next weekend with the new model.
Looking forward to it.

Hi Ron come down for a brekkie any Sunday morning (this Sunday may not be a good one - lots at Coalmine Beach) be good to catch up. There is a wealth of info within the member ranks.

If you want to try an LT give me a call I have one in my shed.

Hey Bully

I saw an LT at Auto Classic on Saturday. What a BEAST! :)
Probably a little too much for me as I need it to be able to be my commuter as well. The RT looks ideal as I can add/remove the panniers at will.

Will have to pop down for a ride next time too.

Hello Bill

You should have a look at Ken Butlers 05 R1200RT, its low mileage and in very nice condition, Ken is thinking about selling and the price might be right for you!

Cheers

Hi I bought a ex police RT 1150 a 2005 model a couple of years ago. Its been great, its been across the Nulabor a couple of times and I have clocked up about 15000km on it without any problems I put a pillion seat on it and it has the original paniers. It hasn't missed a beat since I bought it in Melbourne. I might be interested in selling at the right price if you are interested

Bill, welcome to the Forum. Do come down to Sunday breakfast at Catalano's (you have to be up early) & Ken might have the RT out. Does the FBH ride? Am keen to get a gender balance amongst this group, but that might be a bit like pushing 'you-know-what' uphill.
