For anyone interested, the guy who does the molded earplugs in Perth is Lex Shipp on 0428 507 335, or lexshipp@bigpond.net.au. He generally does it from his home in Carine.

At the next meeting, one of the raffle prizes will be a half-price offer on a set of earplugs. Normal price is $70, but if you win the prize, it will be $35.

He also does the ones with the earplugs included, but they cost a bit more.

I've never had earplugs that work; these ones do!

Has anyone tried his earplugs - I have been using the standard foam ones and have been thinking about getting a proper set.

I was reluctant to shell out that much, however it came down to saving my hearing (already pretty dodgy), so I took the plunge.

I've never had much success with the usual yellow roll-up-and-insert type earplugs. They seemed to make things worse, if they did anything at all.

Having used the custom-molded ones for a month or so now, I'm sold. They are a lot more effective, and I can see from the shape of them why the yellow things never stood a chance (wrong shape, wrong size). You still get the rumble, but things are a lot quieter, especially at the mid and high pitch ranges.

They're not perfect, but they are better than anything else I have tried, and if it helps save your hearing, it's $70 well spent in my opinion.

I haven’t tried Lex’s earplugs, but I did have some custom moulded earplugs made up in the UK about 5 years ago (Ultimate Ear).

At the time they seemed horrendously expensive, and initially they felt a bit “odd” but after using custom moulded earplugs for a day or two I’ll only ever use “standard” earplugs if I’ve misplaced the moulded versions.

In fact they are so comfortable that I use them as standard “headphones” whenever I’m listening to music on the MP3 player.

Unfortunately, after 5 years of extremely regular use both on and off the bike the wiring for the headphones are starting to show their age now, so I’ll be having a run out to Lex for another set in the not too distant future.

I’m hoping that he may be able to repair the wiring in my existing set, but as a worst case, I’ll have one set of ear plugs with and one without speakers.

I’ll stick another post up when I’ve got the new plugs, and hopefully I’ll be able to give some comparative feedback (no pun intended) on Lex’s earplugs.

I have had Lex's molded ear plugs for about a week now.
First impressions have been good and seem to be comfortable for the long hauls too.
They are not perfect so I won't rant and rave about them, but the obvious advantage over foam is less inner ear irritation. I found the foam ones had to be pushed a long way in for good sound block and this then caused my ear to ache after a while. It also caused reddening.
Now I have none of those problems.
I tried sleeping with them in but they are a bit hard and bulky which makes them uncomfortable sometimes.
Still I am glad I have them and will now always use them.

I could have done with some of these in the Jencumbine hall after the annual dinner..... Yes Jamie your chainsaw impression is quite impressive

I have been using moulded ones for over a year after getting a set of standard ones and a set with the sound wire tubes in them.
The noise reduction is better than soft plugs, I have less trouble with ear infection or sensitivity.
You need to be carefull how you put them in and take them out so you dont bruise the ear and then they feel uncomftable to wear.
The sound ones make a big diffrence, standard ear piece MP3 sound level at 110kmh is 12-14 volume setting, moulded plugs sound level setting 4-6 at 110kmh,
A scarf around the neck also helps with wind noise as it breaks up the air flow and distrubes it sufficently to reduce the wind noise near the base of the helment.
I still carry a set of soft ones as back up though if I lose one or my ears get bruised by not taking them out carefuly.

They stood out too far from my ears, so the helmet pressed on them (doesn't do it with my Schennheiser plugs, for example).

As I turned them out one day, the right one just, literally, split in half.

I'll stick to the cheapies.

Something sounds wrong for sure.

I'm curious... who did you buy yours from? Were they DIY mold or molded by the seller? Also, how long had you been using them when the right one split?

Bought them "from the horse's mouth" at the Perth Bike Show (not this one, the one previous).

S'OK, I'm not angry -- I think from looking at them, there was just a simple air bubble that weakened it.

I know he'd fix it for me -- but they still press on my ears.

My moulded earplugs stuck out too far and hurt when they pressed against the helmet. Did not use them for a long time then I trimmed them off a little with a very sharp knife and they fit perfectly now. Use them all the time on long trips.

I've had a set of each for several years and swear by them, the set with the speakers I use all the time (just done 15k with them) Lex did a great job with mine and I'm sure that if your set is uncomfortable in your helmet he will do somethimg about them.

I had a set of each made last Thursday evening and tried them out on the Geraldton trip ~ 4hrs each way without any problems, job well done, definately recommend them.
