No Pies in Piawanning

Post by Bozo »

Wes and I took advantage of the stunning weather to scope out a wildflower ride in a few weeks and to check out Eddy's report of a road with a bigger hills than the woops in Lancewood Road.

We got rid of the cycling hoodoo by passing a peloton at the Causeway before scooting past the international airport and settling in behind a high wide load. Turning off to the Chittering Valley we left the traffic and cyclists behind.

The Brockman River was running a banker and the clouds had cleared.

Eddy had told me about Tea Tree Road that was a magnificent ride and that had hills that were unbelievably steep. I mistook his report to mean that the road surface was excellent and was surprised to travel into a massive valley on corrugated, rutted roads with deep erosion gullies. They were impressive hills but I wished I had not taken my road bike which might still be in the steepest gully had it not been for a bit of momentum gained coming down the hill and the luck of not dropping into the gullies that cross the road. Wes handled the conditions well keeping clear of my erratic path trying to avoid the erosion with my slick road tyres.

Back on the bitumen it was a quick run down Crest Hill Road to the Bindoon Bakery. A local biker named Kim had a chat about how good his V Strom was before we headed to Wannamal. The fire orchids were yet to bloom but the reserve at Mogumber had blue squill, milkmaids (burchadia) and many other wildflowers. Yarwindah Brook Road was amazing with its patchwork of Canola and dark green crops. At the intersection with Great Northern Highway there was masses of donkey orchids and sundews (drosera).

A top up of 91 RON fuel (no premium in New Norcia) and we were on our way to Piawanning. The sleepy town had no food outlet open so we headed to Yerecoin for a steak sandwich.

The trip to Wongan Hills was again magnificent green and gold landscape set against a blue sky.

A brief stop in Toodyay with a few Targa West cars passing by and we crisscrossed our way back to Perth via Clackline, Wundowie, Woorooloo, Chidlows, Sawyers Valley and Mundaring.

A great day out. Shame Wes has to work on Sunday.
