Roadworks rumble on a loop to Lancelin

A massive roll up this morning with lots of clusters of members around bikes. Strangely a Suzuki seemed to take top billing, possibly because it will never look as good given His Royal Griceness plans to farkle it with secondhand bits off his current bike. Good to see DFS on the road to recovery. I counted around 40 bikes which makes it one of the largest turnouts this year.


A bakers dozen of participants on a dozen bikes took advantage of the stunning weather to do a loop to Lancelin. Gerry, Shock Jock Anthony, AAA Anthony, Dave, Brian, JC, Nannup Nick, Sophie, GS Bill + Trish, Just John, Peter Bee and Bozo flew past the airport and took a bypass at Baskerville to see the Stirling Tree. This tree is over 250 years old as it was a mature tree in 1827/29 when it was marked by Stirling's exploratory party or Stirling. It is heritage listed at http://inherit.stateheritage.wa.gov.au/ ... c61ec47012

I first found out about it from a book by a Loton descendant.


The tree has been burned and struck by lightning but still is mostly intact.


It is still right on the boundary of Location 5

Unfortunately we lost Gerry who had gone ahead to get fuel. The group then travelled through the Chittering Valley to arrive at Bindoon. Shock Jock Anthony had a planned departure bring us down to ten motorcycles for the run up Mount Panorama (Crest Hill Road) and on to Gingin via Moolabeenie Road. A reasonably traffic free run up the Brand Highway got us to Regans Ford where there was a large group of Open Road Motorcycle Club members assembled but no emus. Orange Springs Road was brilliant until we struck 7 kms of roadworks with a slick limestone surface transitioning into ball bearing gravel. Despite there being no rain my name was mud.

A fox darted out to drink from a pool in the freshly watered road but slunk away when the motorcycle group arrived. Two eagles were talon wrestling high in the sky as we resumed sealed surface on Cowalla Road. A clear run for the run along Sappers and KW Roads before arriving at the resort in Lancelin just in time to place lunch orders. A deep history discussion including surveying, shotguns and message sticks was followed by a run home past a burning timber plantation on Cowalla Road and an easy trip down Military Road and Old Yanchep Road where the ride ended.

Very enjoyable to be out. Waiting to see if tattoo parlours will be busy this week. Thanks to Peter Bee for running as tail end charlie.

Most interested in the survey tree.
I didn't know it existed even though I worked in the Lands & Surveys Department (or the former departments) and the survey section for 20 years. Amazing the tree is still standing. I have seen and conducted searches/investigations on survey boundaries on many of the Crown Grant books in the records section dating back to early 1800s.
A great part of our history. Take me there one day, I want to see it.
