Earlier this year we went out to get a bit of practice in for the 5000km round trip there and back for Desert Raid 2023.This year the destination is Jupiter Well up toward The Gibson Desert. It is isolated and you need to be ready. You need to have the skill to do the trip. It was the first hit out for a while. We were out in the mud, clay and rain. We had an unexpected turn of events and learned a lot from the experience. This video was put together to:
1. Give thanks to those emergency services people who are on the frontline every day rescuing and saving lives.
2. Let you know what we experienced in terms of using the Garmin inReach 66i.
3. Suggest some things that are important for those out riding like we do including equipment, organisation and preparation.
The most important line of the whole experience was, "Never take walking for granted". It says it all. Our fella was lucky and it would be a waste to miss out on putting this video out there so we can all get some benefit from the experience.
Of course there are so many things that can and do happen. So whether it is running out of water or fuel, having only one communication device or a flat battery in the device, not doing the right first aid preparation or research and having the necessary back up we wanted to let you know it is adventure, but it can also be a matter of life and death if it goes wrong. We hope it never does and we look forward to everyone enjoying the adventure.
Love the preparation, the ride, the stories for years to come.

Our man is well and both walking and riding again.
Have an enjoyable Christmas.

Re: inReach SOS Activation Rider Down HD
Thanks Cookie and Happy New Year!
I’m still getting the hang of the videos, replying and there’s still some way to go on both fronts.
There’s now only 223 days until Desert Raid 2023, but who’s counting.
Perhaps one further point I should have mentioned was, no food or drinks due to the medical situation and impending surgery.
The Rider Down course organised by the Club was a very useful reference for me to fall back on on the day.
Jean sees the fun side of it and we all learned a lot from the experience.
Perhaps the most important is riding with those who are reliable and trustworthy. It could be a matter of life or death.
Looking forward to 2023 being, The Year Of The Ride”.

Re: inReach SOS Activation Rider Down HD
Hi Kots
Watched your video and there is plenty of good advice you have there, also it is very comforting to know that we in Australia do have an absolutely 1st class rescue service when required. Your video also brought back a lot of vivid memories of my recent accident, in which I also broke both bones in my left leg. I now have a nice steel plate screwed in there. My accident occurred in April 2022 when I was out near Lake Ballard. I Came across two major rain storms and the second storm quickly turned the track to a very slippery mud. The bike slipped out at low speed but I still managed to break my leg. I sent off an SOS message via my spot device and was rescued from the mud in a very short period of time.
The same as your mate, Iam back offroad riding again, no worries.
Maybe catch you at a Sunday breakfast in vic park sometime or if you are heading out on an offroad ride 'let me know'. would be happy to join you.
All the best
robert

Re: inReach SOS Activation Rider Down HD
Thanks for the comments Robert.
I am pleased to hear you're back and riding.
As Jean said, "Never take walking for granted."
As I get on, I guess my bones become less robust and I'll be making certain my gear is the best it can be. However, in the end it is about getting out and joining our mates, on those rides we love.
Sunday morning with the Club is one of the very best places to start to learn the skills we need from those we learn from and develop mate-ships with across the years.
Looking forward to catching up on a Sunday soon.
