Stirling Oven..

Post by Bry »

To the boys at New Norcia the other day, do you remember me saying I want to do this road through the Stirling Ranges? I posted on another group as well, thought I'd through it up here too!
I planned like discussed, Convinced Jacky to come, be cooler down south I said...

I looked at the temp gauge on the shed door, in the shade, at midday Saturday....

Image

I'm still going!....
On Sunday I got the bike out and it was like this...

Image

That's 32c at 7:05am Jacky packed an extra litre of water... I should've just worn a backpack with clothes in it and filled the Givi with ice!

Worked our way south drinking everywhere, sooo hot. Fuelled at Cranbrook at the automatic station, where faith on the button pushed for the quantity of fuel is the only way to go as with the heat I couldn't read the screen on the pump!

Turning off Albany highway,

Just out of Kendenup the goal was in sight, (through the sweat)

Image

Getting closer

Image

Road wasn't too bad at this stage, some harsh corrugations, but it became a balance of shaking the beast to death at slow speed or finding the happy medium where you were cresting the humps.

Image

Finally got to the start of the road, it's only 42K's long, but the scenery was awesome!

Image

Image

The road just dribbles into the scrub...waaay over there.

Image

Image

The corrugations in this shot weren't too bad, but some of the others? Cripes, the poor bike was shaking, nothing fell off but the quality of the gravel was harsh and took some nasty nicks out of the Pirelli's. Sharp rocks, heard of them, never ridden on them, some of the gravel was deeper =sharp= rock... yayyy

Image

Some more shots.

Image

We were the only ones out there. Maybe that should be we were the only stupid people to be out there.....
Image

Image

"A SELFIE! OMG my Dad did a selfie!" My daughter pointed out, She then sent me a photo of her under the air con... little sh*t.....

Image

Image

And it got hotter...

Image

The end of that road... yay...

Image

From there we headed through a unbelievable heated wind which was shifting us around through to the Porongurups... Which was insane! It was hot and moved us around quite a bit as gaps opened in trees, temp slowly crawled to 32 by the time we hit Albany. Get into Albany and end up straight at the Police station cause I find a wallet on the main roundabout in the center of town, gah....Can't escape the joint.

The next morning, we woke up to this...

Image

It was raining.... it was cold.. I wasn't used to it...

Image

Only Several fattening things were eaten... which reminds me I should be going to gym..

Image

Image

Jacky! Trial by fire pillion, she said she'd do again (not in the heat though)

Image

When I got home.. cooler!

Image

Be a good ride to include down south, some of the rougher corrugations were a surprise though.

Lastly, the shots were all on a little camera phone as someone had pinched my mem card from my camera, but the phone has a panoramic feature, gave it a shot! (FWIW they're big)

It's a great ride we did it after it had rained which kept dust down and was a reasonable temperature but the corrugations where still fairly ordinary and the gravel was a bit loose.
We should put the ride on the club bucket list for a ride on a long weekend. Apparently the wild flowers are pretty spectacular around September.
Great photos Bry.

Bry

Great trip report.

When we lived in Albany the saying was 42 one day 22 the next.
