This Rider hit a dip too hard in Station country and broke 4 spokes. The wheel was oval shaped after that. Ride over Buddy.

Day 5 update cont…


We had rain overnight which made riding conditions tricky.



Time to wash off today’s mud.


End of GS Safari Enduro on Saturday with lots of back slapping, high fives and tall stories about how good we were. From there, I will make my way back to Perth via Innamincka, Strezleki Track, Oodnadatta Track, Uluru and Great Central Road. I have my G2G passes for SA and NT and so my Adventure has only just begun.

Safari update including the return journey home…

Day 6. (Last day of Safari),


We only had one fuel stop avail on the last day. Great in theory but….
After refuelling three bikes they ran outta fuel!



We had to divert 30 km to obtain fuel and then rejoin the Route. We lost about an hour.



Safari end at Toowoomba.
Farewell dinner that evening and the presentation of some awards. I was granted a set of tyres cause I travelled the furtherest to attend the Event. I also sourced a used tyre as a spare for the return journey (just in case). Glad I did!

The journey home.


Bummer. Got a puncture in the rear just short of my destination to Cunnamulla on my first day out. What is a nail doing on the main road? It cost me 30 minutes. Easily plugged but still a PITA.




Welcome to SA. I have to cross four States including WA just to return home. A 5,000km journey from one side of the country to the other. And that why I ride a BMW R1200 (wank, wank)!



The roads NW of Innamincka were closed due to rain. More rain was expected which threatened me getting out along the Strezleki Track. I got out when I could.

Return journey cont…


Bummer. Another rear puncture…this time on the Oodnadatta Track. I managed to limp into an old abandoned railway siding (from the original Ghan Railway Line) to get out of the strong side wind that was blowin’ a gale.



Lots of water after Uluru on both sides of the NT/WA Border. I had to walk each obstacle to check depth and pick a route to negotiate. Some crossings had chicken tracks alongside but not in every case. I had wet feet for two days…not pleasant.




Another crossing. In the distance you can see a Hilux bogged with another 4WD assisting.

Return journey cont…


I came across two deep crossings. The first I negotiated successfully by stripping all the gear off the bike, making several trips carrying the gear across and then riding the bike.
This crossing (Giles Creek) however was too deep, soft and flowing. I had to wait overnight for the level to drop and get assistance by three others to push the bike across the following day. Not much traffic on Great Central Road at this time of year.



The rear tyre failed 700 km from Perth on some back track. Repairs were futile. The casing had split. I had to swap it out with a used spare that I was carrying (‘just in case’)



5,027 km to get home across the middle of Australia….just another day at the office!

I gotta get out more.
