Greenhills Tavern trial run

After breakfast on Sunday Wes and Bozo scoped out some new roads for a club run.

A quick trip to the Lakes was followed by a short bitumen deviation at Yarra Road from Great Southern Highway. A right angle turn onto West Talbot Road was followed by an excellent motorcycle road with a new surface, sweeping bends, wandoo landscapes and picture postcard farms.

The recently sealed road takes you all the way to Beverley on bitumen and whilst it narrows after Qualen West Road it still is a great alternative to the Brookton Highway. The location called Chocolate Hills is very dramatic with its loamy soil contrasting with granite outcrops.

Wes and Bozo turned of West Talbot Road at Qualen West Road (bitumen) and then took a bit of good gravel (Ovens Road) to the Great Southern Highway. A few hundred metres later they turned off onto Gwambygine East Road which commences with a narrow concrete causeway and bridge over the Avon River. Gwambygine East Road transitions from bitumen to good gravel just after the Top Beverley Road and then intersects the York Quairading Road. A left turn into Penny Road had us approaching the small but historic town of Greenhills. Greenhills came into prominence as the terminus of the rail network in 1897 and as a rich agricultural area.

Pulling up outside the Tavern we soon noticed that the opening hours were 12:00 midday to 2:00pm on Sunday. Whilst getting ready to ride to York a friendly face peered out from the front doors and said come in for a coffee. Bill Hart, the loquacious owner, gave us a history of his and his wife Gail's 13 months ownership of the historic 103 year old pub followed by a tour.

A quirky location worth a trip with a larger group later in the year. Northam via York had us at the Avon Food Festival along with a thousand locals followed by a pie at Bakers Hill.

A very enjoyable reconnoitre with some great roads hopefully a precursor for a ride later in the year.
