The Loop

Post by Richard Hughes »

The ride to Carnegie in May is going to be a starting point for me and who ever wants to come along to carry on east to Alice Springs, via the rock, then head north along the Tanami road taking in Wolf Creek Crater, then the Bungle Bungle Nat Park, Kunanurra, then the Gibb River road, then start heading South via the coastal road.
Details are yet to be worked out but I'm looking at about 3 weeks.
As always I plan to seek out dirt as much as possible, bush camp most of the time with Pub lunches.
Shane, Dren and JonO are possible starters.
I'ts a long ride, but I'm doing it, I've got the time off and the O.K from the boss.
Anyone up for it?

So Richard,
when you leave carnegie are you heading straight east along the unmaintained, sandy, overgrown with thick, spikey scrubby stuff with fetid/putrid waterholes gunbarrel highway or turning back the way you came & picking up the GCR? Gunbarrel does have a certain appeal.

Also, you going on the 1200 or the missus's bike for this epic?

oooops, me wrong

Recent update on gunbarrel. Not as overgrown as I thought, only in parts, thats the good news. Lot more soft dry "shifty" sand & very large corrugations - throw a shadow at 4pm type corrugations.
just trying to stay accurate, Pete

First things first, Not sure on the route, talking to people who have done the GB, I would say no to the un maintained section, but the decision would be made on the day ie local reports etc, I don't plan to plan the trip down to the last detail, just get on and go.The route would depend on time, weather and what we feel like on the day, I'm not one for regemented travel.
Secondly although the wifes Dakar is a very capable bike and would be a good choice for the off road sections, I would have to steal it because she wont even let me ride it down the driveway.
The GS is the bike I will be taking.

If we get PR then I'm a "probable" for this one. The Egyptian Colt would naturally be the weapon of choice, failing that, the R75/6 should rise to the challenge most admirably.

Ben,

Ssshhhh... don't tell Richard, but I've secretly worked up an itinerary for the Loop. You know, just to make sure we don't go too quick or go too slow.

Anyway, we'll probably be somewhere near Alice Springs on 5 June and possibly around Broome or 80 Mile Beach on 20 June. So in between those dates it'll be Tanami Desert Rd, Bungle Bungles, Kununurra & Gibb River Rd. That's a long way for you to ride to join in and then you'll have to peel off to get home in time for work. Your call Ben. Have you got an iron butt?

Remember, keep this itinerary info to yourself - Richard gets very cranky when someone mentions that word  .

Shane, as I said before, Itinerary's are an important part of any trip from the planing stage to something to refer back to after the ride, During the actual ride they should be stored deep inside your gear and only brought out during times of crisis, i.e when the toilet paper has run out.
Please print afew extra's for me as I dont plan to take any toilet paper, so as I said before, your itinerary will come in very handy.
Note:, I have never felt Ben's arse and don't plan to, so I can only take your word for it regarding the firmness.
P.S I am fitting a lock to my tent door.

Richard

Beware of paper cuts :P

Was thinking of laminating the itinerary - dunno which would be better - watching you suffe'ring' with paper cuts or hearing the whinging when you realise the 'dunny paper' is laminated. Haha.

8 weeks to go.

8 shrot weeks , then 4 Long weeks.
How about write the itinerary on the toilet paper, duel use and gives you something to read whilst waiting for the "splash Down"
