I am trying to find someone else interested in riding up to Carnegie Station through the middle. Basically, Northam-Goomalling-Dowerin-Cadoux-Pynes Find-Sandstone-Wiluna-Carnegie. The return trip to be made up as we go, or whichever way you like.
I am interested in leaving Perth on the Thursday morning, to get to Paynes Find that night, then camp outside Wiluna on the Friday night.
That is the basic outline. Anyone keen ?
Cheers,
Gavin.

Hi Gavin

I am also keen to ride up but I am looking at taking the Friday and Monday off only. PF is only 450 kms from Perth and Wiluna a further 500, leaving only 300 to Carnegie. So.......I was planning on getting between PF and Wiluna on Friday night, then blasting straight through to Carnegie from there on the Saturday. I'm riding an old R80G/S along with a mate on a slightly newer R100GS. We want to stay at the fabled Paynes Find Tavern on the Sunday night on the return leg but yet to fine tune these details......

Depending on your pace, Lake Mason (station) might be the ideal overnighter.

It's about 40kms after Sandstone on the Sandstone/Wiluna Rd. That'll make it approx 680km from Perth.

This is how I recall the place as it was in April 2008.

The 'camp' ground at Lake Mason is nothing more than the area (dirt) near the old shearers quarters. No beds - just chuck your sleeping kit on the floor. There are camp fire rings with a BBQ plate I think and wood was supplied. You can have a hot shower if you're prepared to start the fire under the donkey. (google 'donkey heater' if u want to know more).

Billions of flies love the place so take a fly net!

I think they charged me $5 for the experience. It's not real flash there (flies), but unless the joint is packed you won't have to pitch a tent and you can have a hot shower.

Have a good trip.

PS: John - watch out for the mud if u go into Youanmi mine

Gavin

I am hoping to head up to Carnegie taking pretty much the same route you have described and also departing on the Thursday morning. I dont fancy going hard Friday and Saturday and would rather enjoy the trip by adding the extra day to complete the distance.

I had hoped to go on the loop ride with Shane, Richard and Dren but had to give up on that one as I could not get away for that lenght of time.
If you are still keen on leaving Thursday let me know.

Cheers
JonO

Hi Jono,
Yeah, that is the way I have been thinking, just take it easy rather than beat yourself up with longer days. I have been giving a bit of thought to booking a room at the Paynes Find hotel for the Thursday night, but as far as something like that is concerned for the return trip, I don't really have anything in mind at the moment. I was going to decide once I got to Carnegie.
I have been on the blower this morning about hiring a sat phone for the week, from the 27th to the 3rd. The only price I have at the mo is $22 per day, plus cost of calls. Hopefully there would not be any calls made :P Though if this bit of bad weather gets out that way, there could be some concern.
Can you give me a call on 0412039694. I have lost your number somehow.
Cheers,
Gav.

I haven't been to Wiluna since around 1992 when I last did a lot of exploration work in the greater Wiluna region, and camping just outside Wiluna back then would not have been considered a good idea because of theft and other local issues - this may have changed since then, but it is probably worth confirming the locals situation prior to making any plans to camp just outside Wiluna. We would stay at the Wiluna hotel from time to time, the hotel being emcompassed by a 2m high chainwire fence with gates locked at night, but we still had to stow all of the equipment from the tray of the ute and the inside of the ute cabin, in our hotel rooms so that it wasn't pilfered through the night. Cheers

Hey, thanks for the heads up about the Wiluna area Noel. In light of that, maybe camp about 40km down the road towards Carnegie on the Friday night ?

I thought it might be quite an idea to have one of the kings of gravel (like Robin, Chris, Pete or Shane) give us a brief rundown of what to expect, once we leave the smooth stuff at Wiluna. Once we are lurching off into the abyss, it would be quite nice to know where the meeting point is exactly. Obviously, if we see something big and red sticking up out of the air, we have gone too far...............

Hi Mickle,

I've only just seen your post from Saturday, sorry about that.
At the moment Jono and I are going to get away Thursday am, but no real agenda as to meeting point yet. Maybe at Farrells for a coffee around 0730 ? I have booked 2 rooms at the PF hotel for that night.
Give me a bell on 0412039694.

Cheers,

Gav.
