Hi all,
The area of the proposed ride, what was the old Mungilli outstation is an active community and part of the Birriliburu Indigenous Protected Area. I would suggest another site for the ride. I thought Robin had suggested Geraldton Bore.
cheers

Thanks David.

Yep, that was Robin's suggestion, but he isn't the sole decision maker, never has been.

Re the outstation... see the advrider thread for more info. Two advriders will be visiting the community this year for a yarn. If it can't be there, that's ok, it'll be in the general region.

Something I should have said in my 1st post - this isn't a club ride. This is a ride for like-minded individuals doing their own thing, who may or may not be club members.

This is a copy'n'paste from my thread on advrider.

Digger, Prof Disturbed, Dren & I ventured out to Mungilli recently.

We selected a suitable alternate site near Mungilli Claypan for the Desert Raid 2017 gathering.

The site is 154km east of Carnegie Stn along the Gunbarrel Hwy and is:
  • easy to locate
approx 50 metres off the GBH
has a large mostly flat open area with soft ground
    has plenty of firewood
    see photo's #1 & 2
Co-ords from my GPS are S25 24 02.2 E124 15 56.7. The site is 3kms along the track east of the junction of the Gunabarrel Hwy and David Carnegie/Eagle Hwys (photo #3).

We were able to confirm that the Mungilli Outstation which is approx 18kms north on the Eagle Hwy IS occupied and is regarded as a private community by its residents (photo #4).

Notes:
  • The dirt road from Wiluna to Carnegie Stn is in very good condition. It is a proper formed road, not a twin track. No sand. (photo #5)
The dirt road from Carnegie to Mungilli Claypan is in very good condition. It is a proper formed road, not a twin track. No sand.
If there has been reasonably heavy rain on the 2 roads above within the previous 48 hours, stay put and let it dry out a bit. They are nearly impossible to ride when muddy. Do the station owners a favour and don't chop up their only road to the nearest town. There will be some mud in the floodways after 48 hours but should be OK to cross.
We travelled on these roads on Sat 7 May. Carnegie recorded 30mm rain overnight Thu/Fri prior. Two riders (not with us) had attempted to ride on their 650 bikes from Carnegie to Wiluna on Fri. They only got 45km before turning back. The 90km aborted ride took them the whole day! They were stuck at Carnegie when we got there with one bike having 'fatal' electrical issues, possibly from the wash down they did to clean off the mud caked all over the bike.
We didn't check check out the Gunbarrel Hwy east of Mungilli although it looked as though it was an unmaintained twin track from that point east and not at all like the dirt road west of Mungilli.
Carnegie Station:
  • only takes cash
has very minimal food supplies available
has a limited range of cooldrinks
is not licensed to sell alcohol.
I don't think they do fast food for travellers
has limited donga accomm available (only a few I think)
there is a reasonable lawn area which MIGHT be available for tenting (I didn't ask them about it, so call first to confirm)

Photo #4 - track north to Outstation is a no go

Photo #5 - typical section Wiluna to Carnegie (the section from Carnegie to Mungilli was nearly as good as this)

Please note the new date on the 1st post.

Now SATURDAY 12 AUGUST 2017

The new date brings Desert Raid 3 days closer to the 40th Border Run and is a better fit for those wanting to do both.

Gents

by way of clarification, I think the Mungili clay pan is just south of Wooramel Station - just north of the Shark Bay turn off. The one for this ride is the Mangkili claypan - east of Carnegie Station. Similar pronunciation!

Also, the Landor Races north of Gasgoyne Junction up at Landor (if that's the meeting you referred to) are on 30 Sept to 2 October.

Cheers,

Mike

Hi Mike...close; but no cigar. Mangkili refers to the Nature Reserve...the Claypan is named 'Mungilli' but thanks for your interest in this event. Hope to see you there.

G'Day Slackers,
I'm interested in reading people's thoughts on how (which roads and tracks) they may be getting there and back.
Has anybody looked that far ahead yet? I'm still out to lunch on whether I am going on the 650 or 1200.
Decisions, decisions.

I find myself in the same quandary, oh wait . . no I don't!

Sometimes you make the right decision, sometimes you make the decision right.
Some people are like Slinkys, you can't help smiling when you push them downstairs.
