Thanks fella's..arrived home last night, a 1,315k day all in 5th gear, had a great time, all went well till last Fri when at Victor Harbour, my gearbox had only 2nd gear, we were at that stage camping on a property, Bob Rees said that can get a higher gear if bike gets turned upside down, so tank off, hoisted her up using the tractor bucket then onto her back, Bob clicked her into top, once back on her wheels the intention was to one click down to the preferred 4th gear, this didn't happen, so 5th it was to be, headed off three days early, had to do some thinking especially going through all the wine region towns, all up did 7, 315k's. Will put a story in the club mag.

Bloody hell...
Just as well there aren't too many built up areas between Victor Harbour and Perth. Where else in the world could you cover 2,776 km without changing gears.

A good point there Steve, 4th gear would have been rather easy to have negotiated through the built up areas, as well as a being a fair big distance cog. The first half day or so till I got to Clare was the most challenging with all the small hilly towns, then after that was more than happy to only have top.....Though as far as I'm concerned...still beats pedelling

That's very funny...made me laugh out loud. A very valid point though. Either way, I guess we're both glad our journeys over.

All for a $2 detent spring in the gearbox! You have to put the later (stronger) spring in when you do the change. You could also buy a 4 speed gearbox off me which doesn't have that weakness!

How did he work out that turning the bike upside down would help sort the gears...may be he was a cyclist...they always turn the bike upside down to fix the gears.

Well done for getting the bike home safely. Does the smell of dry cutting of concrete remind you of the trip? We had some friends who drove across the Nullarbor in a manual Holden with only third gear...it still had third gear when it got back to Melbourne but no clutch.

Thanks for the 4spd box offer John, see what Vince comes up with, your old green machine was there & going well, I reminded Phil that it really should be mine. Dry cut concrete smell Boze, yes I did have that type fragrance wafting up between my legs with a lot of my takeoff's, three years earlier I installed a super duper tuff clutch, so was confident that it would handle it, havnt removed the flywheel yet, am curious to see how it looks.

ps: does anyone know how to remove the flywheel centrepiece (5bolt holes with internal O ring)

Ran into two blokes riding airheads in York who knew about the gearbox problem. One carries a special tool that you can reach in to the gearbox and select a gear. They also knew about the turning upside down solution. Asked what Luftkopf on his tee shirt meant not knowing that I was one for asking.

Boze...Ray Peake mentioned that if you know what your doing with a piece of wire, can select gears through the oil filler. John...bet your 4 speed box doesn't have a kickstarter?
Boze, I believe that you would make a very good Luftkopf.

Hallo Guy. All of the 4 speed gearboxes had kickstarters. The kickstart was only removed halfway into the /6 series. BTW, the flywheel on your R100 should come off using tyre levers being levered off the engine casing (using rags to prevent damage to the perimeter of the matching face).
