The BMW MCC WA – 2018 CAMP COOK-OFF COMPETITION AND OVERNIGHT CAMP

LOCATION: Kalgan, 20 kilometres NE of Albany WA – address provided upon registration.

Ride options can be selected upon registration
1. Dirt ride option probably led by JonO - gravel roads a little bit of sand, not suitable for inexperienced dirt riders, early start probably 7am from Dome Vic Park, just up the road from Catalano's
2. Black top ride will be lead by Cookie - departing Gull Karragullen, corner of Canning Road & Brookton Highway at 9am Saturday 29th September.

When: Saturday 29th September – arrive anytime from 2pm Saturday, or earlier by prior arrangement?
Leave the site by 12noon Sunday 30th September

CAMP COOK OFF - THE 2018 SCENARIO
Theme – Get back to basics
You have been on the road for several days and on the last leg of the trip, you need to use up the tins of food rolling around the bottom of your panniers.

YOUR MISSION: To cook a main meal to impress the judges, from canned, dehydrated, preserved or longlife ingredients, packed in your gear and transported on your bike to Kalgan. 

Your main meal must:  be nutritious, look good enough to eat and taste great.
THE RULES
1.      To enter the 2018 BMW MCC WA Camp Cook-Off you must be a current financial member of the club.  Non-members are welcome to enter, however-not eligible to win prizes in this competition.
2.      Entrants to the 2018 Camp Cook-Off must carry all their camping gear, cooking ingredients, cooking utensils and cooking equipment to the campsite on their motorcycle.
3.      Meal preparation may commence from 5:30pm and cooking must be completed and presented to judges by no later than 7pm.
4.      Entrants must display their cooking ingredients, utensils and cooking equipment for the judges to view, prior to commencing preparation of the main meal.
5.      Your main meal must be created from ‘scratch’ i.e. no prior preparation is to occur outside of, or prior to reaching the campsite.
6.      As a minimum, you need to cook enough to feed yourself and a small tasting plate for the judges. 
7.      Your main meal must be presented to the judges for tasting between 6pm and 7pm.
8.      The judges will not tolerate much bribery.  The judges’ decisions are final and will not be negotiated.
9.      You must use your own stove or camp fire to prepare your meal – use of Campsite facilities is not permitted.
 
CAMP COOK OFF - JUDGES SCORING GUIDE
Contestants will be awarded points for the main meal they prepare based on the following:
Suitability of ingredients to cook a main meal, after being packed on your motorcycle without refrigeration, for several days.
Nutritional value of your main meal.
Planning and presentation of your meal.
Originality and creativity.

WHAT ABOUT THE MOTORCYCLES?
Choose your own route to the event, or join in the dirt or bitumen group rides. 
It is a good idea to clock your mileage – there might be a prize to be won. (Record mileage because greatest or lowest mileage wins a prize, or??)

Friends and visitors are very welcome. 
Why not bring your partner or the whole family along?  There’s ample camping space, good supply of wood for fire pit, access to flushing toilets and running water.
Even some man-made shelter if required.

I am leaving today to meander down - see you all there. Weather forecast is wet and cool, so would suggest bringing the wet weather gear and a fleece or similar.

For those that missed out on the Camp Cook Off, you missed another great event. We suffered through 3 hours of cold and wet conditions before getting in front of the weather to find much nicer conditions all the way to Kalgan, where we found a large bon fire gathering momentum. On the return trip we were rewarded with much nicer weather, which capped off a fantastic weekend.

The contestants put on a fantastic array of dishes, combined with elaborate dialogue to support the reasoning behind their dish. There was also 3 entries via text from Highbury, jostling for the judges attention.

Another great Camp Cook-Off

We headed off on Thursday arvo after work, stopped into Narrogin to have a coffee with our hosts. Arrived at the farm at about 10.30pm.

There was much to do on Friday: stocking up the fire wood; house cleaning; moving implements and trailers; shepherding; preparing the bonfires; making sure we had safe power; firing up the hot water systems; installing a large table; OHS checks to make sure no one injured themselves unnecessarily; and so the list goes on...

Never the less, the weather was good, albeit on the chilly side... BOM said 14 degC, Real feel 8 degC. That's about what it felt like. There were, however, sunny and clear skies. Important to keep rugged up and keep busy.

Friday morning out the window of the winter garden. We heard that the weather further north was a little sad. Looks like a damn fine day here.

Sheep need to be moved to another paddock so that they don't walk all over tents. Here's young Andy on a mission to help shepherding. "Hell fun", he reckons.

Once the sheep were translocated, the removalist moved in... shifting trailers, spreaders, wire, steel post, even dead rabbits and maggots. Didn't notice that it was a bit smelly Noel?


After a day of hard yakka, the South-West threw a beautiful sunset our way, highlighted here with the blooming wisteria vines.

Sun-up


The bonfire must be lit up early to ensure a good cooking fire for the camp-cookers this evening.

With the fire blazing, it got a bit smokey around the place. Thursday and Friday a strong westerly wind was blowing. This was good as it would blow the smoke away from the house.

Best laid plans and all that, it promptly turned into a strong easterly wind, fanning the fire beautifully, but spreading the smoke in the wrong direction, in fact everywhere that we were...


The wind did a great job fanning the blaze and unlocking all that carbon into the atmosphere. By late afternoon, it had settled down into a perfect cooking fire with oodles of glowing coals to go around.

As the day unfolded, the players dribbled in... or didn't...

Noel on the HP2 who had ridden down earlier in the week, arrived first. Cookie and Co arrived and promptly set-up his tent and arranged a quiet room for the ladies away from the snorers. This last point was a key consideration for a lot of the attendees... A tired and worn-out Herman, a year on from his encounter with infrastructure in South-East Asia, set-up in that cleared spot in the shed, next to Noel. Whiteman, one of the dirt crew, tried his luck in the shearing shed with the rabbits. Ian W arrived late, still freezing from the first 3 hours of travel from Perth, where it was apparently cold and raining? The dirt crew... now that's a story in itself. The grape-vine has it that three riders pulled the pin at the last minute, due to the weather around Perth. Jono and two dirt riders paused somewhere between Narrogin and Dumbleyung on back-country dirt roads. The HPN again!

There was an alternative Camp-Cook-Off in Highbury, 20 km south of Narrogin. Around 13.30 hrs, after receiving a call for assistance from Jono over very dodgey phone reception, we banged our heads together trying to organise a rescue plan. However, we really did not know exactly where they were stopped. Considering the time and distance involved (550 km round trip to Kalgan), a Saturday rescue really was out of the question. They were barely at the half-way point. So when the Prez finally called in, he had been towed about 35 kms by Jean and Neil to Highbury. Awesome effort! It was agreed that I would retrieve him with car and trailer on the way home on Sunday.

A couple of ring-in judges were pulled off the street. They gave the food and the gig the thumbs up and commented on 'How amazing the whole thing was...'

So, on with the Kalgan Camp Cook-Off...

These guys rode the 185 with trailer all the way from their home all the way to the camp cook-off. Top effort. BBQ and gas for pizza... awesome



Judge JP inspects the goods to ensure that all cooking items were fit per the rules. That packet of SchinkenGriller smokey mild German style sausage clearly states, 'Once opened, consume within 5 days'



Getting that schinkengriller snag closer to the embers... couple of sticks was all it took.





Meanwhile down at the small shed, Herman was getting it on...

The evening passed with a little 'nieselregen' and 'sprühregen'. Nothing that pretending to be a rotisserie and rotating around in front of the fire couldn't dry in an instant...

As usual, the Sunday morning early risers got up and woke up everyone. Just as they had arrived, they left... in dribs and drabs.

We headed off to Albany for fuel. Damn it was expensive (95 @ $1.74... erk!). I topped up with 98 in Katanning at $1.68.



I suggested to the service station operator that he should give me a discount. When asked, "Why?" I mentioned that I had a 33 litre fuel tank and had just added 33.5 litres from his pump. My motor is still running. Perhaps a pump calibration was in order. He was very kind in offering me a discount.

Took a wrong turn-off after Mt Barker. That'd be a surprise. I did find a golden crop of canola to set as a backdrop...



Back on track, I passed through that dyed-in-the-wool Eagles town, Cranbrook. There was one of these on both ends of town.



Wagin presented a colourful entry in and out of town.
