The Hunt for Red Leschenaultia

With the Blue Leschenaultia gracing many of our country roads a challenge was put out to spot the Red version - Leschenaultia Formosa.

12 riders and three pillions took up the challenge. Emperor Eddy, Wes, Ross, Braam, Ken + Juliet, David S +, David, GS Bill + Trish, Alan, Peter, Bozo and Swampy headed through the Bickley Valley to Mundaring Weir. Emerging out of the valley in front of the Dam, Alan's rear tyre got a puncture. Wes and Swampy stayed with Alan to effect a repair and get him to a servo. The rest headed on through Chidlow to Liberton Road and Mayo Road. At Toodyay Road, Braam and Ken + Juliet decided the Red Leschenaultia search was a bit taxing and headed home. A run up Bailup Road with plenty of Blue Leschenaultia but the only red was bottle brush and Hungry Jacks wrappers. A rip down Burma Road and through Wundowie to Coates Road had us passing the Bakers Hill Pie Shop. A brief slow down to accommodate some horses and riders and we took Clackline Road to Toodyay. Eddy was another casualty of the search in Toodyay leaving five + Trish to head through Calingiri to New Norcia. A bemused bungarra quickly headed off the road as the group passed.

Arriving at New Norcia we discovered to our dismay a forecourt filled with Porsches and advice that any food would be at least half an hour away. We amused the flies for half an hour before the first meals arrived and an hour later was back on the road taking Yarwindah Road to Mogumber. Stopping at the Mogumber Reserve we were disappointed with the wildflowers on display, a disappointment that was repeated at Wannamal. The Udamung Reserve was more promising with Trigger Flowers and Pom Poms (Ptilotus manglesii) but no Red Leschenaultia.

It was a wrong assumption that Blue and Red Leschenautia would have the same distribution. We did travel through one of the localities where Red Leschenaultia was found (Victoria Plains) but the distribution seems to be a bit more to the north or a bit inland.

The common Pom Poms at least gave us a bit of colour

Despite the failed search it was a great day for a ride. Thanks to Swampy and Wes for assisting Alan and to Peter for running as Tail End Charlie number 2.

A big thanks to Bozo for leading us on another great ride. But a bigger thanks to Swampy and Wes for leaving the ride to assist Alan with his flat rear tyre. Another display of the fantastic super positive attitude of BMWMCCWA members to sacrifice their time to assist with a breakdown. It makes you realise what a magic group of guys we have in our club and if you go on a ride with them you are in safe and caring hands.
