R Rated Raider Ride (R18)
Posted: Sun 15 Mar, 2020 5:17 pm
A reduced roll up this Sunday with Raider back from Moonee Ponds as one of the special invitees to the reveal of the BMW R18. Discussion about Digger's next ride destination, staple shortages, monster trucks, COVID 19, German Paul's ride, the weather in Bencubbin and challenges for international travel was followed by moisture removal from motorcycle seats with serviettes.
Only four were prepared to attempt the Bureau of Meteorology optimised Bozo ride. Raider of the lost iPhone, His Royal Griceness, Peter Bee (of the rivers of gold fame) and Bozo took the greasy roads to climb the scarp. All bikes were R models (2xR1200RT, an R1250GS and a RNineT) . Peter Bee was travelling with a brand new front tyre but traversed the gravel strewn Repatriation Road with aplomb. Raider and HRG seem to inspire each other to behave badly and it was no surprise when they disappeared off Patterson Road in the Bickley Valley to re-join the ride at the northern end of Lockwood Road having cleaned the grease off their tyres with a stretch of gravel.
Through Mundaring and Sawyers Valley for a stop at the Lakes with very good timing to run into four police motorcyclists and a police car. Heading towards York, Raider and HRG once again took the poor condition unsealed section of Talbot West Road to again rejoin the group. Raider and HRG then swapped bikes and barely a sensible word about suspensions, seats and equipment was spoken during the rest of the ride. Cutting north on the York Williams Road we retreated for a few Kms to get to the Top Beverley Road for the run into York. We ran into a BMW 750/6 that was having trouble with its bings and suggested the rider join the club to take advantage of the Carby balancing gear at a tuning day. Top Beverley Road was having a bit of roadwork that slowed the group down over the section of loose surface.
Through York and Spencers Brook and then Trimmer Road enabled us to take the Eadine Road access (the old Great Eastern Highway) to Clackline and on to Bakers Hill. HRG did a realistic impression of making a cup of coffee into a flat white with the wave of a misdirected hand. Raider set him up with the bakery staff providing him with a straw and napkins and saying that this could help if there were more little accidents. Raider gave us a detailed description of the flash technology used at the launch of the R18 and of HRG's problem of losing keys. Raider's description of HRG's nether regions comfort equipment can not be reported without serious risk of misinterpretation. Fortunately Cookie rolled up on his 1200 RT on his way back from Bencubbin to distract the group from their sensitive discussions.
The group headed home along Coates Road and Government Road to the end of the ride at Mundaring.
Thanks to Peter Bee for running as tail end Charlie. A day full of much humour and pretty good riding conditions and safe observation of Australian wildlife (a spoonbill is not a charge in a Chinese restaurant for being unable to use chopsticks).
