For a change from the usual meeting points this time we picked the Byford Dome. This proved to be a great regroup point for rides down south. Plenty of parking and large verandas to allowing for greater spacing. No hazards trying to get a group of riders out through commuter traffic and easier access for our southern metro members.
Four of us Peter, Eddy, David & Brian gathered at the Ascot Shell / Gloria Jeans for a windy southern ride. At Byford we joined Swampy, Nick, Nick & Laurie. Despite Peter’s warning that the Crooked-Carrot would be crowded, seven accepted Brian’s choice and followed him out for the ride. Swampy however went his own way after Keysbrook. The route out was via Soldiers, Wright, Richardson, Hall, Fisher, Elliot, Hopeland, Corio & Paterson into Pinjarra. Then it was out via the SWHwy to Old Bunbury, Brownes, Mayfield, Somers, Bancell and SWHwy to Yarloop. Other than empty blocks and newer houses in Yarloop you have to look hard to find the evidence for the bush fires that devastated the town. Then on via Clifton, Eckersley, Government, Forestry & Myalup Roads.
The Crooked Carrot was crowded but the queue for service moved through at a reasonable rate and no problems finding a table. Dave rated his Kangaroo pie as an 8.7/10. The other comments were that the prices were very reasonable. There was the usual lunch discussion to solve all problems and which road tyres were best. One of us insisted that we return home via the reverse route. I suspect that this was a clever ploy to wear his tyre out equally on both cambers. The ride was mostly with a considerable lean to counter the strong easterly winds. At least the wind kept the temperature down.
A refuel stop for some in Pinjarra after which we headed for home. Laurie headed via the highway to get some higher octane fuel as the Vibe only had 91. There remainder carried on home via Hopeland road. Peter stated at lunch that did not like going down Punrak Road. Due to a traffic accident at the junction of Hopeland & Karnup we were diverted to Karnup via Punrak. I passed more traffic on it this time than all the other times put together.
Thanks Peter for his TEC duties. A great ride as no one got lost or had punctures
