Border Run: August

Post by Goldie1 »

The Border Village is in South Australia so we will probably need to get a gov G2G pass to get back into WA. Looking at it on the gov web page hopefully not to difficult I hope . For those people that haven’t done this ride yet its a great experience so go for it any advice what to carry or what to have on the trip just ask other club members can help out with advice. You don’t have to have a supper large Touring bike just go your own pace and ride accordingly

Howdy,

All being well (not wet) I plan to head out through Hyden and camp at The Breakaways on Thursday evening. On Friday the plan is to head through to Norseman, on to Balladonia and get to the camp somewhere near the start of the 90 Mile Straight by late afternoon. I hope that a few days of sunshine and breeze will dry what is now a (damp?) haul road between Hyden and Norseman. Check Dundas Shire for road closures etc.

Will head back home from there on this occasion... An easy day ride either on the bitumen (via Coolgardie) or on the dirt (via Hyden).

Then off to Well 5 on the CSR for Desert Raid.

I have been enjoying the Border Run for many years. My first ride across the Nullarbor was in 1973 - rough limestone dirt and bulldust from the Border, through Ivy Tanks to Penong... The Friday night camp at the start of the 90 Mile Straight has always been a highlight. Well worth the effort. If cold fronts are coming through at that time make sure to bundle-up. If we luck-out with a high pressure system, either over the Great Australian Bight or the mainland, then be ready for a beautiful, warm(ish few hours) and inspiring ride. Bundle-up regardless!

Here is something to ponder as you prepare to head off...

Cold fronts - squalls moving eastward (Common - be ready for this weather pattern. Heated grips and good wet weather gear?)

High pressure in the Bight - blue skies and cold easterlies / south-easterlies with possible sea fog (Less common - welcome weather pattern when out of the sea fog)

High pressure centred over the mainland - blue skies with either calm conditions or strong westerlies (Rare - when westerlies encountered be ready for brilliant fuel milage heading eastward!)

See you out there...

Cheers,

Raider

G,day
If the Border is still closed, a few on us are going to Mundrabilla, as we did last year. In any event Raider, I’ll see you at the Breakaways Thursday night, if not at the Hyden bakery.
Cheers

Nurzo,

The Breakaways turnoff is approximately 120km easy of Hyden. It is a small dirt track on the south side of the Norseman Road. You will head around a sweeping left-hander, up a bit of a rise and on top is the turn-off on the right. It was recently re-signposted but ...

The track meanders south a couple hundred meters, down and across the eastern end of a south-facing breakaway and then across to the west below the breakaway face. There is a toilet block in that location.

I will be camped on the flat to the south, on the northern end of Lake Hope at least 500m south of the breakaway itself. Sufficient firewood away from the maim tourist spot.

Cheers,

Raider

PS. Gunna, Looking forward to catching up!

I'll bring a small cask of vintage red left over from last year's aborted run.
