Piles of Bridges

A subdued turnout at Catalano's today with many club members at events in the vicinity of Bridgetown.
Great to see Nurzo Steve looking well despite a broken collarbone from his bike v pig encounter. The ever positive Tim also turned up and Multimedia Mark had been pisimonius in adding a dot to his 314. A lost key was reunited with its owner. RNineT's were the dominant model.
Only four riders assembled for the run to Bakers Hill. Water Mark, Raider, Nannup Nick and Bozo cruised up the Darling Scarp with BJ briefly adding to the numbers as he headed east on his BMW cafe racer airhead. We started striking gaggles of cyclists in the Bickley Valley and that continued on past Mundaring Weir. A quick regather at the Lakes was followed by a run down Talbot West Road with Raider taking the dirt option for the entre to the road.
The resident emus had located a patch of shade about 300 metres from the road and appeared to be having a lethargic Sunday. A run up Talbot Road and Cut Hill Road led to a busy York. Spencers Brook Road, Trimmer Road and Eadine Road got us to Bakers Hill.
After a discussion on some hazardous past rides the topic turned to timber bridges.
The Garratt Road Bridge, constructed in 1934-1935 was the one of the first bridges designed by Ernie Godfrey. Another early bridge designed by him was the Clackline Bridge constructed in 1935. He also designed the Fremantle Traffic Bridge, opened in 1939. The Guildford Road Bridge was another of his designs, constructed in 1937. His major design was the Causeway and he had a key role in the selection of the design for the Narrows Bridge. The picture below shows Ernie Godfrey in the middle of the front row at the Causeway.

The run home was via Oyston Road, Inkpen Road, Hawke Avenue, Vineyard Road, Werribee Road, Needham Road and Liberton Road with a run past Mt Helena to Sawyers Valley on Sawyers Road.
A very pleasant day out with only minimal impacts from horses, cyclists and vehicles. Thanks to Nannup Nick and Raider for running as tail end Charlie.
