Nannup Airhead Ride 2022 - Guy's Story

A call from Ronnie earlier this year "When's the Nannup Airhead run?"
Give Bruce a call I say's, then get back to me with a date...and so 30th April was the day to be.

This being the second annual Airhead Nannup Catchup, last year being a great success, though I have been an Albany VCMCC member for over ten years (not sure what year I joined) this event is actually hosted by the BMWMCCWA.

It’s certainly not difficult to put together, the main ingredient, "people attending upon an Airhead" and the Albany folks once again certainly ensured that, "a very good showing."
Great to see Bob Boyes and John Mckinnon, both who I had a great club trip to South Australia with in 2016.

Last year's winner of the highly prized Airhead Nannup Catch-up 'Most Auspicious Prodigious Bike' trophy was awarded to Andrew Haydock with his bits'n pieces R90/6. Over the years I always seem to get drawn to it upon occasional occasions. It has a big history, certainly not a museum piece, though to me it looks workhorse, I especially like that blue tank.

An 11.00 departure this year from North Dandalup, with John Wightman leading the way, a quick Gnomesville stop, then off to the Kirup pub. Being a Perth lad like myself, Bruce was with us, he didn’t have a problem with that plan, and a lovely beer or two was had out the front of the pub in perfect weather, taking a few pics and catching up with some unfamiliar faces.

About a K out from Kirup, Heath's badly misfiring R75/6 spat its left baffle right in front of me, metal bouncing around, then a few K's further on it conked out, thankfully only through lack of fuel.

The local passing farmer's wife stopped by, phoned her hubby who arrived five minutes later with fuel... too easy.

So off we headed again, though soon to pull up beside Ross Currie who was parked up. We plugged a broken fuel line with a stick and away again we headed, arriving at Nannup about 4pm.

Beer and story time at the bar: Mike (the bike) Henderson whilst in transit upon his pristine R90/6 slammed into an emu. Bruce showed us the pics at the bar, blood everywhere (emu blood that is) thankfully Mike managed to stay upright, also it would be a crime for that machine to get skittled.<

Understandably Mike then headed back home.

Off to the dining room, where Andrew Haydock was presented with his winning trophy from last year (no doubt a very proud man).

This years winner is Dave Lampard with his amazing looking old R50/5 complete with pristine period panniers adorned with ancient stickers.

I must admit that the 'Tobruk Special' R65 certainly caught my eye (clever work).

Then back to the bar we headed, and not long after I headed to my tent (softcock).

Next morning, Bruce was a bit under the weather, he had ended up soldiering on late with a few hardy souls around the fire out back - who would have thought?

Trouble with Heath's R75/6 points next morning, wasn’t looking (or sounding!) good, then John Wightman did a static points timing adjustment, then away she went. All up we counted 24 Airheads... got to be happy with that.

A Blackwood Café brekky then everyone headed off their own way home... think we’re going to have to do this again next year.

So the Nannup Airhead ride by Guy was on again.

A call was put out for all BMW Airheads to head to Nannup Western Australia.

Jono's fleet needs a little exercise. So Rob and I were offered an Airhead each for the ride.

We gratefully accepted the offer.

His Paris Dakar is one sweet little bike that I really do enjoy riding. So it was in my shed overnight 8) .

Accommodation-wise, will Glamping suit? Sure did. Beats the heck out of sleeping on the cold ground.

It's fair to say that Airhead riders are generally quite ingenious individuals. A requirement for pushing these classic bikes around the country and getting home again.
We did experience a hiccup or two on the way down, and indeed on the way home. But we did indeed make it home

We arrived early at the North Dandalup meeting place, topped up with petrol, then departed for a circuitous ride to Nannup.
Not 50 metres around the corner, my clutch cable broke. Using the old cable tie fix and borrowed duct tape from the arriving Airhead crew (Many thanks, that duct tape went a long way to saving the ride), we were on our way. Thanks JW for searching your shed and bringing along a clutch cable. Sadly it was the wrong one.

The remainder of my ride on the PD required minimal use of the clutch lever. I was surprised how easily the PD slipped down through the gears, even back down into first from second gear. Going up was much harder by comparison, so I resorted to shifting up by hand. Better feel at the gear lever and smoother shifts.

We only had to push start the HPN once on the way down. Oh the dramas one loose wire can cause...
Guy's old R100 performed mostly trouble-free. Refreshing to be able to remove the fuel tank in minutes. Not telling you how I know that... 8)

Thanks Jono for navigating us through some absolutely magic motorcycle riding country.

We arrived in Nannup and headed directly to our Glamp sites at the caravan park.

Guy has already written about the event above and associated prize presentation and award, so I don't need to rehash it.
Top night and well organized by BMWMCCWA member 'Guy... Airhead Guy...' (Said with the same intonation as Bond... James Bond...).

Airhead riders stirring on a brisk Nannup morning.

The local hospitality was amazing. Hot coffee delivered 8)

Dennis from Albany had this little well sorted 1979 R65 Tobruk special. 860 apparently, by using 1000cc barrels and machining off the bottom of said barrels. Short stroke revs more freely. Shorter overall width to boot. Sweet. 8)

More Airheads in the brisk morning air... Love the Suzuki DR 650 front end on the heavily modified R65, also 860 (right).

After most everyone had departed for their homes, we got our act together and nipped up to the servo for fuel. Maybe it was the cold morning air, but that was the moment that the cable tie clutch cable fix decided to give up.
The Ring pull fix was applied.

The HPN had another quiet moment or two. It was about this time that the ring pull fix gave in on my clutch cable. I'd only used the clutch twice to get moving. Then it was back to the cable tie fix...
Image

Which lasted until Waroona... where another cable tie was applied. Apparently I could have ridden to Darwin on that cable tie fix. At home, Jono had to cut the cable to get it out of the lever, before fitting a new clutch cable.
Image

The remainder of the journey home remained relatively uneventful. You know I'm pulling you leg... because no Airhead ride is 'uneventful'.

All in all, a very pleasant weekend.

Thanks to Jono for allowing us the luxury of sharing his great classic BMW Airhead passion.

Can't wait to head down to Nannup again on the same route.

Read this on the club facebook site... What do you call a group of airheads?

A 'breath of air' heads

Learnings: The Wedgetail ignition is a wonder. The R100 always just started, hot or cold. Just idled, hot or cold. Beautiful linear throttle response.
