Said to the man upstairs..."want good weather" & he did the right thing for the BMWMCCWA 2023 Nannup Airhead Overnighter...a perfect two days.
11am Sat 29th April there was a rather healthy gathering of Airheads at Nth Dandelup Caltex, I was upon my 1976 R90/6 which I had recently purchased in Cairns & had an enjoyable ten day trip back home. Goldie dropped in though he had to depart the ride at Yarloop, this years trophy winner Dave Lampard turned up, though unfortunately he could not attend the ride...and of course Bruce was there.
John Wightman leading the way through beautifull country side in perfect weather, we arrived at the Kirup Pub at 14.00 for a two beer stop.
Bruce was taking a more direct route upon his beautiful old R50, we were expecting him to already be there, he later arrived, Angus Nichol (from a station near Yalgoo) had come off without being noticed till Bruce spotted him a little later. Without any fanfare Angus sorted himself out, thankfully no body damage, though his bike will need some work.
A right at Balingup then to the Nannup pub to be met by Ronnie, Bob Boyes, Andrew Haydock, Adrian Valley & Huw Jones who rode in from Bunbury upon his grey 1951 600cc R67, the rear rack consisting of a matching grey modified plastic milk crate...rather classy. Once again the Albany lads put on a good showing, as well nice to see a good number of non club Airheaders there.
Lined up outside the pub was a rather spectacular sweep of twenty three Airheads ...had to be happy with that, as well there was a good number of non Airheaders upon their BM's, including ol Lefty who's first BM was an R65 which he rode for 35 years...wow.
Inside for drinks n catchups, then to the dining room for more drinks, dinner & stories "when your on Ronnies table there's no shortage of those"
The most Auspicious Prodigious Airhead trophy winner for 2022 was presented, Lefty accepted it on behalf of Dave Lampard with his white R50 with period perfect fairing, panniers, as well stickers (an easy decision)
For this years winner, "though a close call for the decision committee" goes to a bloke with an old grey bike with a chopped milk crate zip tied on the back.
Next morning, brekky at the local cafe, goodbys, then in perfect weather all headed home.
Thanks to everyone for making our third Nannup Airhead run a success, the word is getting out there, sure will be even more attendees next year...
(have already booked for perfect weather)
ps: When arrived home, phoned Angus, though ok he's a little sore, type of bloke who can sort himself out (station boy) his chopped RT fairing is now messed up, we both agreed, go naked which does suit the ol Airhead, (paint it black Angus) hope to see you again soon, "though how he wasn't spotted having come off during the ride till later ? "
