Smelly Dog GS Ride - Labour Day Long Weekend

Expressions of Interest are invited for the Smelly Dog GS Ride

A 3 Day 2 Night off road ride inclusive of 4X4 support vehicle that would be of interest to BMW GS riders with limited Off Road Experience.

Sage of Smelly Dog Productions has decided with the assistance of Bully to put together a Ride North of Perth that would cover about 1,000kms of Dirt Graded Roads (500km slab) over 3 days & 2 nights.

There will be a lead rider, "BULLY" with UHF & Spot Tracker & SD will be driving Sweep in the 4X4 & trailer with UHF & Sat Phone.

The idea is to put all of the riders camping gear (Tents, Sleeping bags, Clothes bags) into the truck so they can concentrate on getting used to the dirt without all the worry of carrying all the excess weight. They would have to carry water in camelbacks & a small container of fuel for emergencies, as well as the basics they would normally carry, GPS, tools etc

The truck will have UHF & Sat Phone & the lead rider, Bully at this stage would have UHF & spot tracker.

Catering is provided (How good is that!!). The group will also be carrying all the basic needs for bikes out in the bush, oil, puncture repairs, pumps, tools etc.

See the Tour Note posted below for more details.

SD is an ex GSA1150 Rider who never had the chance to do a GS Rally & so thought it would be a good idea to get some of the W.A. boys with limited experience out in the dirt, knowing that they have only to worry about learning to ride on those gravel roads

The ride is planned for the Labour Day long Weekend 5/6/7 March

Can I bring a Suzuki DR :P and will the truck carry any chain lub?

I'm interested, if I don't go to Hong Kong with the Boss!

This sounds like a great opportunity, particularly for those of us like me who are knew to this game who are keen to get as much information on this type of riding as we can and we have here two old hands in Smelly and Bully to quiz for a couple of days.
I am sure the banter around the campfire of an evening will be pretty entertaining!
Putting this type of supported ride together does require organising and a lot of preplanning, Smelly tells me that he needs at least 6 confirmed starters pretty soon or this trip will not happen.
So if your keen let him know ASAP.

Smelly will be at brekkie this Sunday, but as Bowe said he needs 6 to run it. I also need to apply for the Monday off work if the ride goes ahead. I'm doing this ride as a volunteer and covering all my costs myself, just want to get out and ride with a group of like minded big bike riders ( and some smaller ones), sit round a campfire and have a great time. Some of the route I've ridden some not, if Smelly gets the numbers then the weekend before we'll go over it in a 4x4 to check it out, as you can see it can become a logistical nightmare if all done at too short notice. Way I see it, between this run, the March tuning day and the April riding training everyone should be up to the Desert Raid without any problems.

For what it's worth, I reckon this ride should be a cinch on a larger adv. bike for anyone with basic skills using the appropriate care and attention. I have ridden one part of it on my GSA and the other part on my KTM last year and cannot recall any tricky bits (ie sand). As Bully said, it's a great opportunity for newer or less confident riders to delve into the fun of adv. riding without the burden of carrying all the gear.

I hope this ride get's a quorum.

Doesn't look like it will happen.

At this point there are only a couple of riders who have put their hands up.
