Hi, fairly new to the BMW world as I've just recently purchased a 1993 R100GS PD. Im in the process of stripping her down and would like to get the whole engine bead blasted or Soda blasted, can anyone recommend someone who can do this, strip the motor down and clean it up and put back together, cheers.

Hello Sharpie,

Bead blasting these motors is a no no. It leaves tiny deposits in the casting, these get released into the oil and then trash the motor. Soda blasting is ok but you won’t get the same as New looking result, just clean. There is the option of vapour blasting. It uses solid media and water, the media doesn’t break down, the results are amazing but it is essential that the engine parts are very thoroughly cleaned or oil contamination and damage can result. All oil galleries have to be carefully flushed before reassembly and then for run in it is recommended that you change the oil and filter after start up, 10, 25, 50, 100km cheap insurance to be sure all is ok.

Talk to Thorsten and BM Bikes in Myaree he used to have a vapour blaster that he used and would be the right man to check and reassemble the motor post cleaning.
It’s very rewarding restoring these bikes but it’s not cheap.

BTW my RS engine was bead blasted. I’m drinkin that Kool-Aid.

With bead blasting you are only wanting to do the external motor surfaces.
When i have did my XR600R we stripped the motor and then reassembled the motor housings with out internals, blanked off all holes and then blasted the outside surface and cleaned it down.
No internal surfaces exposed to blasting process.
