84 K100RS "glowing" charge light

Post by Andy Goff »

Howdy,

I have an 84 K100RS, 75,000 k's. The "charge indicator" intermittently develops a "dim glow" ( usually when cold / on start up ) with "I think" a related drop in engine responsiveness / increase in vibration ( as if the engine is running rough ). Lately this dim glow has increased to the occasional flare to bright red with the engine going dead for a second or two and then it comes back to life with the light going out.

I've surfed the net, found a few hints and tips but no "solution", checked the obvious connections etc. and still can't resolve the issue ( yet !! ). has anyone experienced this and have a solution please ?

I've got the same on my '83 K75. I replaced my starter brushes, which is the normal culprit but the problem is still there. Must be the alternator packing up. I will update you if I cure mine. In the meantime, don't ride with the lights on. You'll come to a halt in the middle of nowhere! But before you fiddle too much, check first your electrolyte level and then give the battery a good trickle charge overnight. The experts say that you have to watch that very spindly earth wire that comes off the battery. Might be worthwhile undoing it and checking for tightness of the bolts and corrosion.

Get yourself an "R" as a back up! John

Andy, this morning I replaced the whole alternator unit, its just three 6mm allen key bolts that need undoing and BINGO! the bike is charging again and the engine tone is back to normal. Phone me and I will give you the number of someone who can sell you a complete new alternator, else if you are not in a hurry, you can wait for my regulator part to be repaired, refitted into the alternator and you can then fix yours, at your leisure and help out the next bloke who has the same hassle. A third possibility, is you talk to our honourable technical officer, Bully, who I sincerely believe , will exchange his alternator for a slab of Emu bitter, but don't quote me on that one.

To close this out, my problems "appear" to be solved. I did a vartiety of things, breaking, cleaning, and remaking earth connections, the igniton switch, engine kill swithce, multi pin connectors to ingition control and fuel injection control units ( most of this is described on the IBMWR web site ) then replaced the voltage regulator in the alternator, I also paid particular attention the alternator connection as this was quite "weathered". Bottom line, no more "glowing charge light" and an engine that fires up straight away and feels to be back on song. Thanks for the help and offers of assistance, MUCH appreciated !!
