I can only get about 280km out of a tank on the old R80GS, so I recently purchased a couple of 10 litre fuel bladders for those longer stretches between fuel stops.
I used one on the weekend, but didn't need to fill right up, only put about 7 litres in and had the bladder in a canvas bag strapped to my luggage.
Folds up to next to nothing when empty.
Cost ~$180 plus postage from Paul Wrigley at Liquid Containment in Queensland, 0405 138 664.
Thanks for the tip, Pete! Sounds really handy - opposed to them jerry cans!
And yes, aren't we a lucky bunch not to be in some foresaken corrupt third world country. Can't wait to re-organise, get back and continue with life. My apologies to the rest of the committee on having to take of in such notice.
+1 Pete. I also have two bladders that I purchased from Paul some 12 months ago. When full of fuel they are much easier to carry than plastic lawnmower fuel containers as they are pliable and can fit into almost any space in your luggage, and when empty they roll up into a small package which is extremely convenient and a space saver.
The vendor has sent me a (poor quality) photo of one strapped on the back of a KTM but before I shell out the bucks is there any chance of seeing one of those fuel bladders (perhaps when full)?
I assume they're quite durable.
Also, are they reasonably user friendly when decanting, or do you end up fighting spillage? I assume a funnel would always be necessary.
I live n.o.r and will happily travel to your place - these sunny August days are just great to head out for a blast on the GS!
I reckon it must be tough to strap 2 of those on your bike/s, and heavy. [...he says, trying to play mind games, badly] Ummm.... you wouldn't be interested in selling one huh?????
To answer your questions.
1. I am currently in Alice Springs and do not return to Perth until 4 September and will be happy to show you my bladders if you can wait that long, otherwise Pete may be in town and be willing to show you his?;
2. I have two bladders and have only ever used one of them. The bladders were not made exactly how I wanted but then that was no fault of the manufacturer, rather my inability to explain myself correctly, but having said that I am still happy with the result;
3. Spillage. The way mine are designed they do require a funnel to stop spillage when decanting into the fuel tank. I didn't carry a typical funnel (such as commercially available plastic) with me, rather I used a piece of cardboard that I shaped into a funnel and could dispose of at the end of the trip and it also did not take up any room in the luggage of which a plastic funnel would have;
4. Durability. Yes they are very durable and made of a heavy grade fuel resistant vinyl;
5. I bungeed my full bladder on top of the OEM vario case on the right hand side and bungeed a 6 litre bladder of water on top of the left hand OEM vario case and didn't have any problems with the weight being too heavy for the cases or slipping and sliding around.
Hope that answers the questions and if you have any more questions or queries let me know.
Shane
You can check out the one's I have, can borrow one if you want.
Has a screw in spout which seems to work fine without a funnel.
Give me a call. I'm in Carine.
