1200 front axle removal tool

anyone know the best tool to get to remove the front axle on a 1200GS & where in perth to get it or do I just contact BMW? Had a look in the standard tool kit I'm gunna be laughing till I'm ready to get the pension i reckon

G'day Pete,

My workshop solution:
I found a tube spanner in an old toolbox with a 22mm OD end. Like this -

And as luck would have it, I have an old Toyota 2-piece wheel brace which fits the other end. Works a treat.

My portable solution:
Will be to find a spark plug socket with a 22mm OD end. Like one of these -

I'll shorten the socket and then figure out a 1/2" drive or spanner solution (haven't looked that far ahead yet).

Now... if I can only find a vets syringe so I can dispense the final drive oil into the FD at service time.

Gday Pete. I use two nuts welded together. A 22mm and a 17mm, and I also carry a 17mm spanner which serves as the arm to undo and tighten. I wasn't busy today so made one up for you if you want it. It is small and compact and doesn't weigh much at all. This post has reminded me that I still need to do that small brazing job.

Wilks. I used to use the tube spanner as per your post, but when you are next at my place I will show you what happens to the tube spanner when the front axle is extremely tight and hard to remove.

Noel, the idea of having 2 of your nuts in my tool bag has too much appeal. Thanks very much for that I'll just have to pick it up. Walked past the oxy set two days ago, looked at the new hoses i fitted for you & thought you must have arranged something else. If you still need to do the job let me know when you want to come up & I''ll cook a scone for you as well.
Shane, thanks for quick reply. Syringes are really handy for some jobs, i use them a lot. Plastic ones do tend to be single use. If you leave them with the pluger pulled out you can get more use out of them. Any members who need any can just let me know what size they want & I'll arange it. Price is neglible unless you want larger ones - 60ml or so. If anybody, or you in particular Shane, want some Jesse & i are planning on doing the walpole w/e so i could bring them then

I had a hard time trying to remove my front axle for a tyre swap, I welded 2 nuts together but still could not budge it.
I ended up letting tyres for bikes do it, I recomend anyone who has this type of axle, sort it out at home not in the bush, the standard tools are a joke.
As far as the final drive oil filling job, an alternative to a syringe is a drenching gun, sheep ones are smaller, you can drop the line into your oil container and pump away, has "cc" measuring on the pump, cheap ones are about $20.00.
The only problem is the first few sheep get a mix of drench and gear oil, but they live.

I just made two of these for Jono and for Chris Grice. Made a 22mm hex on one end and a 17mm hex on the other (CNC machined) which fits into the 17mm spanner you should have in your toolbox. Stores in end of the spanner.


Can make more if you like. Now, how many friends do I have?
