R1200 GS Final Drive Seal Failure

Post by Davey_sprockeT »

Had the old rear seal showing signs that it's on its way after around 75,000 kays and with all the riding I've done lately...

So time to look into a replacement. Purchased a replacement seal and set about the job.
Secure the bike so it's safe to work on down there and with no risk of falling on you, and clean up all the crap around the local area.

Carefully pry off the outer black ring cover:

Locate the gap in the round seal retaining wire clip, and carefully pry it free and remove

The seal retaining clip:

Carefully drill 2.4mm holes either side into the seal itself
Image

Install 2 x self tapping screws. Careful not to damage the aluminium housing
Image

Carefully tighten the screws into and through the seal. They will eventually reach the housing behind the seal, and start to jack the seal out. Take note of which way round the seal is installed!
Image

Carefully clean out all debris and ensure the seal and retaining clip groves are clean. (During this time, some gear oil did leak out, but only a couple of thimble fulls, so I wasn't too concerned. Once clean, the new seal was checked over and lubed all over with the leaking oil to ensure it slipped in correctly and would seat in the groove and the lip would be lubricated against the hollow tube. Ensure you have the seal the correct way round).

Locate the new seal in the housing and push firmly in keeping it square. Then gently tap further in with a rubber/soft faced mallet/ hammer & piece of timber.
Image

To get the seal fully home into it's groove, gently tap it home with mallet and a drift. The sound will change to a solid tap when it it is fully seated. Check carefully that it is.

Clean and replace the retaining spring clip ensuring it's fully located it it's groove.
Image

Thoroughly clean the black outer cover before replacing it onto the cover
Image

Carefully locate the ring cover and lightly tap into place with a soft face mallet. Check for correct retention.
There she is, all finished:

I purchased the seal at M M in Myaree, with a couple of "how to's" from Brian.
Part number 43225-RK $38.00

Took me just under eight minutes.

Cheers
