K75S starter again - short circuit?

Post by Nilpf »

Help needed urgently.

'92 K75S. Has been unfailingly reliable for the 2 years I've had it (apart from a minor ignition switch issue - easily fixed).

However, after being unused and unstarted for 3-4 weeks, battery is low. Turns over and almost fires, so I persevere. Finally, seems to develop a short circuit across the starter motor - starter turns whatever the ignition switch setting, including when jump started.

I've read on another forum that trying to start with a low battery is a no-no. Why would that be the case?

Please guide me through diagnosis and fix - P-plate daughter means this is now my only means of independent transport !

Fixed.

Thanks to help from the invaluable KBMW group on Yahoo.

Simple freeing and cleanup of the starter relay contacts.

Back in business.

 Hi Andrew, I know this is an old one and you have fixed by cleaning contacts. Just for future reference, when trying to start with low voltage battery, the starter contacts weld together, hence, continuous running of starter.
Sorry for late reply but could not log in and have been dying to tell someone I knew what the problem was.
