Garmin Zumo 660 firmware update

Hi all,

Here's a funny story on how to murder a Garmin 660 Zumo
I've had it about a year now and thought whilst I'm loading some new music, I would check for any firmware updates etc.

No worries, checked, and yep, one is available.
Downloaded and installed.
Finished up, and shut everything off. Disconnect Garmin, put on table, do something else. Few minutes later, walking past, notice Garmin has been left on....thinks..”I don't want to flatten that”..picks it up and switches it off......whilst just noticing in small writing “do not switch off... installing firmware update"...FARK !

All dead...will not come back up...check on line...try the power switch hold down for sixty minutes...for reboot....all no good FARK ! “I've killed it".

1) Why don't they write that stuff in BIG writing (not 1 millimetre high letters (hard to read without glasses)
2) Why the hell not disable all switches whilst installing any software.................FARK !
Now gotta go and pay some idiot to crack in and reinstall old version, then do the firmware upgrade.

Not happy Jan..........

You have been warned.................

Was your Zumo connected to your PC and were you touching one of the 4 corners of the Zumo screen whilst pressing the power button?

Don't worry there is a solution. When designing the software rule 1 "despite instructions To the user not to do something ie turn off during flash of firmware, there will always be one who does, so publish recovery instructIons.  "
You may need to re flash the firmware in which case you will need the firmware update file to reapply. Google the problem and you will find the answer.

Hi Shane, it was a few moments after the PC was shut down and the unit disconnected and placed on a nearby table. Walking past a few minutes later, I thought I had left it on, so I picked it up and turned it of. As I did, I read the (very small) wording:"do not switch off updating firmware" !! (hard read being small print and no glasses)

Hi jon, thanks for the help  apparently if I take in they can fix it, so hopefully it won't be a drama.

Funny thing though on todays ride, I had to go back in time and use the ipod (what a pain as it wriggled around in the tank bag, and difficult to change track & volume with gloves on) as opposed to tapping the zumo with gloves on. :P

Can't wait to get it fixed and back on the bike. (ordered the Touratech sunshade today).

Thanks guys.....

Before you pay anyone Davey... first, connect your the Zumo to the PC and then press/hold the power button whilst maintaining touch in one of the corners of the screen. Perhaps try the bottom right corner. It should fire up.

If it does, then follow Jon's re-flash advice.

If it doesn't... well, you already know what to do.

"you may need to re-flash the software"?

Hmmm if Davey flashed his software, I'm pretty sure I'd stay turned off too......

aauuhhhmmm,
thanks Bry and Shane for your suggestions 8)
Took the unit away from the first business ( did nothing despite having it three days, see ya!)
New business tries "all he knew" to resussitate the Zumo, but with no joy. "You've killed off the software and not even left enough so as to see the drive".
We will have to send it to Sydney   and will probably be 2-3 weeks...
Don't we have overnight airbags anymore?
2-3 weeks, well kiss my ar*@ goodbye.

Could be 50 dubloons, or if it's cactus, possibly 250 dinero for a "replacement unit"

So folks, don't turn the little rascal off without reading the fine print (tiny writing on the screen)....and don't blame me, as you have been warned

Have you actually spoken with Garmin? I recently had an issue with one of our Rino650's - emailed Garmin, received automated response and also response from a Garmin employee within 24hrs (as their site mentiones) - was asked to send unit across to them, air bagged it from Alice to Sydney, 36hrs later received email to say new replacement unit was on its way. New unit arrived in our Perth office 6 working days after I initially made contact. This was a faulty unit, but email them - if you haven't already, and see what suggestions they have??
