R1100GS neutral light/ ignitionfault

Hi all. I have recently posted a few issues I'm having with the 98 1100 GS I 've just bought. Please note I also intend to contribute to the forum with my findings on the investigations I carry out. I also plan to get involved with this club and get on some rides. So please rest assured I'm not just trying to freeload information.

R1100 GS is a 98 model. Bought it over Xmas in Melbourne with 67+ K on the clock. Official service history is patchy but I believed the owner when he said it had been regularly maintained by a general bike mechanic with a BMW interest. Heaps of receipts etc. and a general good feel to the deal. Bike is in very nice overall nick. I flew over boxing day and rode it back to Serpentine. It now has 71+K on the clock.

Issue is:

Upon stopping the bike and selecting neutral, it can sometimes take up to 15 seconds for the neutral light to come on. Other times it happens immediately, other times it takes a few seconds. That doesn't worry me too much though. Worry is upon turning on ignition, whether bike hot, cold or whether it was used 1 min ago or 7 days ago, it again can sometimes take up to 15 seconds for the neutral light to come on. Other times it happens immediately, other times it takes a few seconds. Thing is, until the neutral light comes on you can't start the bike. Right now it is an inconvenience only (though half way across the Nullarbor over Xmas it got me a little nervous now and again). What I'm waiting for is the day the neutral light simply does not come on and the bike wont start.

On what might be a related issue, I note that the motor automatically stops when you put the side stand down, even if the bike is in neutral. Is that normal? I used to own a 2007 R1200R and I 'm sure I recall that the motor only cut if sidestand was lowered when the bike was in gear. Thinking faulty relay or something in relation to both problems. If anyone has been here before and can help me,I 'd be grateful.

Cheers and see you on a ride soon.

Serpy.

sounds like you need to get the bike over to Vince at Bassendean Motorcycles for a thorough going over, he is very willing to spend the time with you and explaining how it all works or more to the point , how it should work.

I see you have posted a couple of issues - have you got any answers yet from meeting the other members if not I will give a couple quick answers on each .
Neutral light sender and side stand safety switch can have issues. Generally dirty oily connections. A common novice mistake is to use pressure washers - don't as they will also cause these type of problems. If not connectors could also be the switches/senders on the side/bottom of motor - if problem need to replace.

Thanks Thumper. Got most of the problems sorted now. I'm not too bad mechanically but as far as electics are concerned I know just enough to totally stuff up everything. I will check out your suggestion, ut ultimately i think this might be one for the professionals.

Cheers mate
