Apparently Wilks had a rear brake disc failure and end up in the bush
Part is common to a lot of other models.
Potential to be mirrored to left and right swing arm models.
Look for cracks around bolt holding lugs on rear wheel carrier where the brake disc mounts.

Wilks may fill us in on other details.
Mike Henderson wanted other club members to be aware of the issue.
Noel has some information on the subject as well.

Re: Rear Brake Disc Carrier Failure
It's a problem that's been around a while. At first it was thought to be limited to the earlier 12GS models. BMW beefed up the disk carrier presumably in response to all the failures. However the cracks are starting to turn up n some of the later stronger carriers now.
There have been several of these failures in WA. Dave at BMR sees them quite often and recommends you check for the cracks developing regularly, here are a couple of pics of one hat he changed out a year or more back.

Re: Rear Brake Disc Carrier Failure
It has been widely reported elsewhere that the updated flange (or disc carrier) has changed from aluminium to steel or part steel. Online part fiche confirm there has been a weight increase in the new version. When my replacement arrives I'll give it a high tech test (stick a fridge magnet on it
) and report back.

Re: Rear Brake Disc Carrier Failure
Off the cuff, but if every time each of us had a new rear tyre fitted, we could talk to the tyre fitters about the cracked rear disc carrier to spread the word.
So eventually all our tyre guys would get to know that the R1200's have this flaw. That way it goes into legend / folklore, whatever and everyone knows.
The message then:
BMW R1200's have a manufacturing flaw where the rear disc brake carrier cracks on the disc mounting flange, please check every time a rear tyre is changed.
This could save someones life
