the battery is fully charged (OK it has been sat around a while) and when back on the bike - turn the ignition key and just get a click - no engine fire.
Checked all the usual - battery contacts etc, any solutions or things to try appreciated the one that works will be rewarded in the usual fashion (beer tokens).

Damaged side stand switch.....had that one. Even with the stand up, the switch still registers "stand down"

Battery may be on the way out, it can be fully charged but not holding the charge that you have given it or the plates have shorted out. The click is a bit of a give away to the battery probably needing replacing. This happened to my GSA . Replaced it with a new battery ( lithium ion) and no more problems.

Hey Bill
Any chance you can start a new thread about your switch to a Li-ion battery please? It would be a handy in the future (at least for me) as a local reference. Just a few details about the battery you chose, where you bought it and some pics would suffice. Thanks.

Oh yes, the alternator of course. Mine went around 50k. New one ~ $1,300. Thortsen had it rewound for just over $300....still working 5k later! apparently on F8GS over 80% failure rate in USA over 50k miles. If not yet save for it.......

Have you tried putting the battery on trickle charge for a few hours? If it's the same maybe the starter has a dud bendix. Not sure if there is a starter relay which may have gone on the blink

Well its pretty new battery (10 months old Motobatt) doubt its that, however:
Left it on change for a few days the smart charger said it was full? couple of starts later and it went click again, leads me to think its the battery.
Batteryworld in South St said they would test it under load to see the real story. Bought from slipstream performance who were not overly helpful when I rang up said it had to be sent back to the distributors in Victoria...
Moral of the story - buy local, support a local supplier, to help ensure they stay in business and get good service, especially warranty
Bill gets the beer tokens ...

Sounds like a relay to me, although not familiar with the F800, have you tried jumper leads to give it extra heartstart .

Have you made sure he battery connections are tight? A loose earth lead could result in insufficient power to the relay so starter is not powered up?

Just had the same problem with the DR.
Been laid up for a while but connected to the CT battery tender. The swine wouldn't do anything.....plenty of headlight and horn, but nothing else.
Feeling it wasn't the battery, I started to check all the interlocks that they have.
Side stand micro switch- this is a sealed and potted unit, so injected the contact cleaner into it, then tested with the multi meter. Switch was making & breaking, so all good there. Flushed with water dispersing oil.
Next came the r/h handlebar switch cluster - start button & kill switch. Pulled it off - all bright & clean. Both tested and working OK. Contact cleaner and WD oil.
The seat was already off, so looking around, I next checked the main fuse - removed from holder, bit of a clean up with a knife, contact cleaner then WD oil (not WD40).
Noticed several electrical disconnect plugs, so one by one disconnected, contact cleaner followed by the ol' WD oil.
Not sure which little b'stard it was as I didn't try to start it after every connector, but sure enough, it turned over and fired up! Albeit a bit grough since it's been a little while since the last time.
So all good & ready to go. I guess it' winter, so we should all be around and working on our bikes and fixing those little things that need attention, ready for the weather to improve so we can go riding.
PS: I am now using low strength (purple) grade Loctite on just about every fastener I remove and re-fit to prevent losing any more "bits". Medium and high strength applications remain the same.
Cheers

It worked very well on the border run, still not sure about the spring rates, was good with a full tank but improved out of sight when down to half a tank, will probably put the Bitubo inserts in and feel the difference.
