At this stage the GS911 tool that I demonstrated will probably become the club tool. There is a recent update on bikes etc it is applicable to :

F800ST (Engine (BMSK) & Vehicle Electronics (ZFE) only)

Added realtime display of Digital Input values for BMSK (some culprits that could prevent starting):

SideStandSwitches 1&2,
OilPressureSwitch
Tools -> Check for Updates (if you have internet access you can check whether your version is current)
Help -> About : lists your specific Reseller's support contact details
Some layout changes in the way models are selected

I also managed to acquire a BMW diagnostic tool for the following bikes :
Motronic + ABS Fault Code Reader and Resetter

For all Boxer (R series) and K models with the following equipment:

ABS I / ABS II
Motronic control unit MA 2.1 / MA 2.2
and 3-pole diagnostic connector

R 850 R; R 1100 R / RS / RT
R 850 GS / R 1100 GS
K1; K100RS (4V); K1100RS ;K1100LT
R850R; R850GS; R1100R; R1100RS; R1100RT; R1100GS

Not suitable for R 1100 S / R 1150 / K and R 1200 Models !!

Following features are possible:
Read and reset the Motronic error memory
Read and reset the ABS error memory
Check and adjust the throttle flap potentiometer
BMW K models: check function of the water cooler fan
A full description / manual including all error codes in English or German included!

So, we now cover most bikes except Kenny and Johns vintage machines (use screwdriver to ear method for diagnostics). More presentations will be made regarding these tools at a future event or tuning day once I have seen how the tool for older bikes works.

Thanks Geoff for informative post - although fingers crossed I will not require the services of the 911.

Hi,

I have a BMW R1100RS 2000 model, and need to find a diagnostic tool...the R1100 has a 3 pin connector under the seat behind the fuse box...I think the tool mentioned on this forum by Geoff is what I am looking for...

Can you please tell me the brand and model number, and from where it was purchased? Also price if possible.

The story goes like this...
I had the bike idling while pulling on my helmet prior to heading out for a ride with the local bike club...the bike just stalled...no coughing or spluttering, and then wouldn't restart...the engine turns over but not any sign of trying to fire up. I had just filled with fuel the evening before. The next day the bike would start if I held the throttle open and run at 4000rpm but if the revs drop at all, it stops and doesn't fire again. I have checked numerous connectors etc...

Any suggestions welcome,...

Cheers from Emma

The latest diagnostic tool arrived about a week ago, and this is suitable for your bike. The tool is currently being tested by Lefty (the Editor) to see what it does with his bike. One a K75 it did not seem to work but that may be because of other issues.

There are a number of reasons why a bike will not start.

Kill switch. We always check that first so we don't embarrass ourselves.

Generally under conditions described by you, the best thing to do is check the spark plugs, check that there is spark when you turn over the engine. If that is the case, then electrically you are probably OK. The other essential ingredient is fuel. It sounds like you have a fuel delivery issue, and no amount of electrical diagnostic tool is going to tell you what that issue is.

Can you hear the fuel pump when you turn on the ignition? If not, then go no further. If so, then you need to establish if there is actually fuel getting to the injectors. Generally you could unplug one of the injectors and see what happens when you turn over the bike engine. You need to make sure you put it back properly though, else you could end up on fire.

It sounds a bit like you have a fuel blockage/bad pump or no spark.

We are not providing a bike service here, just making sure the diagnostic tools are available for club members. Let's see what Lefty has to say about the latest diagnostic tool first before I recommend it to you.

Hi Geoff,

Thanks for your reply...

The bike does turn over...and the fuel pump does whirr...and fuel pumps out the hose from the tank (which I disconnected) when the fuel pump runs...can't see any spark though when resting a plug on the head...and have replaced with new plugs...I do get a reading on multimeter when connected to 3 pin socket but not sure I am detecting or understanding the pulses correctly...

I realise you have not tested the diagnostic tool, but after much 'googling', I haven't been able to find much info on diagnostic tools suitable for the R1100RS, so would appreciate info on the tool brand, distributor etc and will not take it as a recommendation...I will make my own assessment after enquiring with distributor and doing research.

I also understand it is extremely difficult to provide technical advice on this forum, and I don't expect you do that, but much thanks for your advice.

Have found the non starting fault to be caused by a corroded pin on the Motronic connector...cleaned pin and bike now starts and runs ok.

Thanks for your assistance.
