K1200RS Exhaust System

Post by nickbrett »

Hello all,

I noted a thread on the forum relating to GS exhaust systems and wondered if anyone within the club has experience with 'opening up' the OEM exhaust system on a K1200RS and what the potential benefits are to this, rather than going the full after market exhaust system route. I don't want to end up with a really loud system, but a little more 'bark' and any potential power advantage would be welcome. Cheers.

Having been down that path with a K1200RS myself, the power gains are slim without a chip to alter the fuelling. Looking at the graphs, it doesn't gain a lot of power, but the motor did feel free-er with the aftermarket exhaust. The chip which I later fitted smoothed it out but at the expense of fuel economy.

I've read various reports of cutting the cat out of the system, again most state the bike felt quicker due to seat of the pants measurement!

Biggest gain with the swapping of the system was the weight, holy mother does the standard system weight a ton! that and you no longer have the heat issue by your left foot anymore.

The K1200RS is one of my favorite BM's ever, I had one for five years.... no one here would beleive me, but I did..

Thanks for the response. What system did you end up fitting? I am aware that Staintune do a full system to suit the K1200rs, as well as companies such as Two Brothers Racing and others. As mentioned previously, I don't want a particularly loud system. I have a Staintune Touring system on my R100 and that has a good tune to it, hence I'm tempted toward the same if I were to go aftermarket, but at present I'd like to further explore the OEM mods until such time as that system actually needs replacing.

Yes, twas a staintune, a very nice piece of kit. The original will last a LONG time, so change if you find a good price on one. they seem to pop up now and then. Ceratinly not as loud as the TB and laser, and never needed repacking.

(hey wanna buy rego "K1200RS"? 8) )
