Alternator R100LT

Just bought this bike (R100LT)trying to have the alternator checked out by local autoelectrican he can't find it -I am a new BMW owner- can someone tell me where and how to locate it?
most of the boys that would know are probably at the border run.
There is a workshop day at my house next weekend if you can wait that long.
