Hi there,
I am looking at installing an old Steib sidecar (1949, from Germany) onto my 1963 R50/2. Obviously being German and driving on the RIGHT side of the road, the sidecar attaches to the right, not the left. I am having difficulties convincing DOT that this is the way it should be.
Has anybody gone down that track and what was the outcome?
Cheers
Manuel

Re: Steib Sidecar
Hi Manuel
You are putting them in a difficult position because you are proposing to put your passenger into the traffic. The problem is that you will compromise the structural integrity of the sidecar, by modifying it to fit the "wrong" side. If I were you, I'd join one of the clubs that has a concessional license examiner and ask his advice. You may be able to get it concessionally licensed with the car on the right hand side.
cheers
John

Re: Steib Sidecar
Thanks for your advice John.
As I see it there is no difference between a left hand drive vehicle and a motorbike with a sidecar on the right side. Interestingly enough there is a provision for vehicles. You don't even need a sign if it is older than 30 years.
Very frustrating!

Re: Steib Sidecar
I happened to see a BMW with right hand side car attached earlier this week at the Warwick off ramp.
That would suggest you can license them that way? Unfortunately I don't have any intact details for the rider.
Good luck
