Helicoil's (or similar)

Hi Folks,

After a bit of a break from trying to resurrect Carissa (there other things in my life than BMW motorcycles), the promise of warmer weather in the not too distant future has re-kindled my enthusiasm.

However, I want to try to nip the next problem in the bud before it becomes an issue.

The thread in one of the heads for the central cover retaining stud is pretty chewed up, and my bet is that the head cover wouldn’t seal as is.

Therefore does anybody have any experience of Helicoil (or similar) tread repair systems?

… just the general stuff … can you get the inserts locally, do you really need to buy their placing tool or can you use a home made option?

As usual any other advice or suggestions gratefully received.

Cheers

John

I know that Searle Fasteners in behind Bunnings on cnr High Rd and Leach Highway Willetton have piles of helicoil stuff, and lots of bolts and anything almost to do with threads and fasteners. In fact, I have not been in there and not got what I wanted except they don't carry brass screws and order them in. I personally have never used any helicoils so cannot comment on how easy or difficult they are to install. Perhaps easier to have a go than try replacing the head, cheaper too.

Searles may be able to offer another solution if there is one, but helicoils are std fix in these cases.

Thanks Geoff,

Next time I head across in the general direction of Munich I'll call in and see what the guys at Searle have to say.

Cheers
