GPS

Post by mix68 »

Hi,
Just got quoted over the phone $1306 for a gps kit from the dealer for my 08 gsa.
Wondering what other people are using, and does anyone have feedback on the bmw unit or any others.
I myself would prefer mount above instruments so what mounts are others using?
I am sure it could be done cheaper but ..... is it worth spending the money?
Cheers, Mixta.

don't buy the BMW outfit, check out

or

the BMW branded ones, whilst being Garmin units, are usually dearer and Garmin will not service them unless they come through a BMW dealer, who of course, like to make money.

the Garmin Zumo range is very good, Touratech also make lockable mounts for them

Ive had a garmin zumo 550 for 4 years now and it has been faultless. It fell off my bike once on a dirt trail. My fault as I had not secured it properly, but it was fine not even marked. I run city and hems maps. They are not sold new now but you can buy them second hand. For a good price. So +1 for the Garmn units :P

The zumo 550 as Jon mentioned is no longer made. I owned mine for 5 years and it self destructed on the corrugations of the Tanami Road a few weeks ago - otherwise it was a reliable unit. The zumo 350LM and the 600 are available. Both these have similar capabilities, and compatible with Garmin's Mapsource and Basecamp for trip planning. They also accept maps such as Tracks for Australia (and others) and have the capability to take to directly to a set of co-ords in either UTM or Lat-Long. I just bought the 350LM - it came with motorcycle mount and also Ram mounts if you wish to mount that way. I do not like Ram mounts and have mine mounted on the BMW GPS bracket on the HP2 and a Touratech (I think) bracket on the GS.

Gday Noel. What do you mean by 'self destructed'? Did the display/screen go crazy then die? Or the unit shook to bits? If its the former, I may have an answer for you.

Gday Shane - The unit would without prompting, send me off on a random Route, then the Route would disengage and the keypad would pop up and the letters would be flickering back and forth between random letters, then a random route would display again. I reset the unit several times and then at one point became a bit peed off and ending up cracking the screen, so the unit has been relegated to the used equipment stash at home. Still interested to know what your possible fix is though. Cheers

Cracked screen sounds terminal. All the symptoms sounded like the digitiser had died... which is apparently cheap and relatively easy to replace diy.

Maybe this will help... http://www.advrider.com/forums/showthread.php?t=528905

Old Thread Revival
My Zumo 550 now 6-7 years old I think? started to play up.
First it took greater and greater pressure on the touch screen to get a response. Then while I was following a route it would throw up the way point save message and I would have to clear it off to see the route again. This way point message started to appear more frequently and was getting annoying toward the end of the trip.
A week later and I put the unit in the car so my daughter could find her way across town to an appointment. Worked of going there but then she said she had trouble with it coming home. I figured that she had parked in the Sun and let the unit sit there and bake however after a cool down the unit was harder than ever to use the touch screen was super erratic and navigating the menu was nearly impossible.
Then I remembered Wilks post about replacing the digitizer, an article he linked on ADV rider. I looked it up, and thought it worth a try. So I looked on ebay and found a couple of adverts for digitizers. Ended up ordering one from Germany rather than China. It cost18 Euro's an another 7 or so to send and took a few weeks to arrive. In the interim I had to can plans for a dirt ride down to Nannup / Blackwood partly because I could not access my tracks and partly due to family commitments. Anyway the screen arrived in the post today, so back to the ADV Rider article and I set about replacing it. Well how easy was it! 10 minutes later the unit is reassembled and works like a charm. In fact it seems to work even better than before. The touch screen responds perfectly. The unit is water tight and I am back in business 8)

So if any of you have a Zumo 550 that has gone crazy or is starting to play up this might be for you. See Wilk's post to ADV Rider earlier in this thread.

Here is a link for digitizers for sale

Having used a 550,on a rental bike in UnZud, and being the owner of a 660, I would recommend a secondhand /refurbished 550.

I think so? Will be home in a few weeks so will have a look, but then I gave Bryan the cradles, which now my memory has been jogged, he still owes me a coffee for. I bought the 350LM as a replacement which I have been happy with.
