Camp cook-off 2016-weekend..12-13 Nov

Post by BillB »

Check out the web site for the link to the proposed campsite.......

We are considering this location for the annual camp cookoff this year.
I intend to ride the route today to check the gravel section for suitability for road bikes.
The committee is yet to determine a definite date. We will keep members posted once we lock in a date.
This year is going to be a bit different. We will be evaluating criteria such as overall weight of cooking utensils, bulkingness of preparation equipment, simplicity of ingredients, nutrition , creativity and overall appeal of the meal.
Each participant will be scored with points out of 5 for a list of each contesting category.
For instance less weight of all collective food, cooking utensils will get more points than a lot of weight. We will be measuring the weights. The space taken up in the panniers or on your bike by the same collective will also be scored.
So the judging will be scientifically , quantitatively be carried out using a number of score sheets of a number of criteria with each contestant getting an overall score depending on their final determination. So the score will not be judged just on the final meal put before the judges as in previous years. This contest will make it more challenging for a theoretical rider stopping for a meal during a trip and preparing their meal. The challenge is to be minimalistic , realistic, creative and nutritionally fulfilling.
In the past prizes have been BMW jackets and vouchers from Auto Classic and many other great prizes.
The location is in a magnificent area of forest national park near Congelin in the South West.
Members should plan to participate in this fun event over a weekend

A group split off from BOZOS RIDE GROUP this Sunday morning and checked out the dirt (14 km on the 14 Mile Creek Rd and another 2 km on the Williams-York road to the campsite turnoff) We checked the road condition using BOZOS new bike as a test bike for Rd bikes with Rd tyres.Swampy refused to use his bike  . Bozo reported that he felt the Dirt was ok for road bikes with road tyres. So this route is a lot shorter than doing the all tar route.
We will be giving additional scoring points for cookoff contestants that ride the shortest route.

Image
The group checking out the Congelin camp site. There are fire pits , toilets , covered tables and food preparation areas and good tent pitching spots.

Image
There were quite a few campers camping when we arrived so to secure an area for the club function we will have to arrive fairly early. I will make some enquiries as to booking an area.

This campsite can be approached on black top with about 2 km ofgravel entering the park, via a longer route from a turn-off from the Albany hwy 4km North of Williams for participants that aren't fond of travelling on gravel

Dryandra Woodland, near Narrogin, is a valuable nature conservation area featuring the largest remnant of original vegetation in the western Wheatbelt. 24 mammal, 98 bird and 41 reptile species are all known to call Dryandra home, including Western Australia’s state mammal emblem, the numbat (Myrmecobius fasciatus).

Fauna

Although the numbat is Dryandra's best known inhabitant, woylies, tammar wallabies, brushtail possums, tawny frogmouths, kangaroos and wallabies are regularly seen here. Birds seen in the area include the mound-building malleefowl.

Barna Mia

Experience the wonder of the woodland and its wildlife on a guided nocturnal tour of Barna Mia, a predator-proof animal sanctuary in the heart of Dryandra (bookings essential).

Flora

Dryandra is an especially scenic area with magnificent woodlands and spectacular wildflowers in winter and spring. The open eucalypt woodlands of white-barked wandoo and powderbark covered much of the Wheatbelt before it was cleared for farming. Thickets of rock sheoak and kwongan heath provide habitat for several of Dryandra's rare species.

Stay Awhile

Accommodation is available at the Lions Dryandra Village. Campers are welcome at Congelin Campground and the new Gnaala Mia Campground which have camp sites suitable for tents, camper trailers and caravans. Fees apply.

Getting there

Dryandra Woodland is less than two hours drive from Perth on sealed roads. Roads within the Woodland are unsealed, but accessible by all vehicles.

Walking Trails

There are numerous walking trails you can take to discover the diversity of life in Dryandra Woodland. Ranging from 1km to 12.5km, there is a trail to suit everyone. Go to TrailsWA for more.

Drive Tour

The 23-kilometre self-drive Darwinia Drive Trail includes five pull-over bays where interpretive information is provided on the complexity and interdependence of natural systems at Dryandra. Using specific examples of relationships thisdrive will take you into the heart of the woodlands. Pack a picnic lunch or take a short walk to search for orchids near the granite outcrop at stop five.

NOTICE OF EVENT CHANGE The committee have come to an agreement that unfortunately the selected dates for the cook-off need to be on the same weekend that the Conto's ride was going to be run. The campsite will definitely have open fire restrictions if we leave it further into November. If we run the event too close to Cookies Conto ride members would probably not be enthused by having 2 full weekend events so close together and if we hold it sooner the lead up time probably would not be long enough to successfully hold the event. Cookie and the rest of the committee agree that if the cook-off is going to happen this year then this is the way to go and those members that wanted to do Contos will now be able to attend one of the clubs most popular fun events instead with great prizes for the 3 best rider cooks. The Contos ride may be held at a future date.
Keep an eye on this thread for how the judging criteria will be carried out and what is expected of contestants to take out the prizes

Or the camp Cook off could have been organised earlier and therefore no need to clash with another organised ride.
Just saying.
I was looking forward to doing both of these rides.

Robbo fair comment. Unfortunately these events just don't happen instantly, the cookoff has been a work in progress since July. We discussed holding the cook-off again for this year, with myself being given the job of checking out a number of suggested destinations. These included Green Head, various country halls, camping grounds and finally Dryandra campgrounds which required 2 separate trips to evaluate road conditions so we could determine suitability for both dirt and blacktop riders. As the event is a social event with most partners also attending we had to keep in mind the need for a few more facilities than hardened outback dirt hardliners would feel comfortable with. Not being overly familiar with what is available I have had to spend many kms and weekends riding to some of these venues to check them out to evaluate if they would be meeting our acceptable requirements to make a great venue.I would also like to give Bozo my appreciation for helping me with this. This has probably taken more time than I realised it would, as the terrible weather over many of the weekends ,the distances required to travel to these venues and other time restrictions has made the process fairly long drawn out with now October just about disappearing. Also at committee level there were differing opinions as to getting the event up and going at all with some indicating it probably was getting in the too hard basket to organise in the small window we had left to organise it. Previously we had Anthony organising these events over a number of years utilising his country background where he knew the locations he knew about thru first hand knowledge of the venues. We felt we should try for a different region to hold the event from previous venues.
So yes Robbo it could have been organised earlier in a perfect world but it hasn't been easy. We only finally agreed the Dryandra campsite meets our requirements with a ride down there again last W/E for a second look at the 14km dirt section so we can categorally put members minds at rest who have limited experience riding road bikes on gravel, and giving them a realistic description of that section of road. Unfortunately the event needed to fit into the small window of time that encroached on the Contro ride. Hopefully the Contro ride can be rescheduled.
Hopefully members will appreciate the venue we have decided on and come along for a great weekend

ENTRY CONDITIONS FOR WINNING THE COOK-OFF
The challenge is to be minimalistic , realistic, creative and nutritionally fulfilling.
We are trying to simulate a rider on a outbike ride arriving at a campsite, unloading the camp gear and preparing a meal. The idea is to be realistic, simplistic, quick and does not need to be a gourmet delight requiring you bringing half the kitchen from home. This will not impress the judges as when packing for such a ride weight and volume are important on such trips.
ENTRANT REQUIREMENTS:
1. Entrants must be paid-up financial club members.
2. To enter you must make the journey on a motorbike and take note of the kms taken to arrive at the campsite.
3. All food, cooking utensils and preparation equipment must be carried on the motorbike. These will be scrutinised and weighed before any cooking takes place. Also the overall space taken up by all this material will be documented.
4. The meal is to be prepared and the time taken to prepare it is to be timed from start to presentation stage on a plate. As the judging will be fairly busy, be prepared to exhibit the prepared meal in an orderly fashion. The judges will scrutinise the meal with the challenge requirements as outlined (The challenge is to be minimalistic , realistic, creative and nutritionally fulfilling.)
5. The judges probably won't be eating any of the prepared food so the owner does not have to carry more food than necessary and the presented meal can be consumed when it has been judged. The judging will be based on nuitritional values, simplicity, time taken to prepare, a realistic meal for a outback ride and the creativity involved with the meal. Alcohol may be also added as an extra if the contestant thinks it will enhance the meal...
6. In the event of a total fire ban at the campsite entrants must be flexible and still manage to have a meal presented which could be an additional challenge.

In previous years we have had a number of cookoffs where the judging has been all about just the food and preparation of the meal, this year we will be judging as explained using a greater range of criteria to possibly help riders with useful hints and ideas for when they head off on that big ride and need to pack the bike and take the right supplies.
We have prize sponsors already helping out with prizes with BM Bikes (Thorsten) Auto Classic and Nedlands Dental Centre coming forward with prizes so far.
If any other members can arrange for businesses they may know who might also like to sponsor a prize please let me know.
I will be driving down early in the ute to try and secure an area to hold the event as it can get fairly popular with other tourist campers. There is plenty to see, experience and do at the national park so why not also come down early. Partners that don't want to travel pillion are quite welcome to travel by car....
If I think of anything else I will publish it on this thread....

CAMP COOK-OFF 2016 JUDGING
1. WEIGH IN, REGISTRATION , VOLUME AND TRAVELLING ON DIRT DETERMINATION
A. Participants are to register on arrival at campsite with event organisers.
i. The organisers will be on site from 1200 hrs to secure a suitable area for the event
ii. Participants who arrive close to 1200 will receive 5 points decreasing to 1 point if they arrive at the cookoff start time of 1700 and 0 after that time. ( decreasing by 1 point for each hour )
iii. Participants are to document the distance travelled on dirt. 5 points will be offered for those that tackle more dirt by travelling to the event via dirt roads. There can be quite a lot of dirt or not a lot. Honesty comes in here with claims being taken with some description of the route taken. With less dirt travelled if going by black top,as the last 2 kms will be gravel , everyone will get 1 point for their efforts. ( this 2 km is very easy gravel that for those a bit worried shouldn't be an issue if taken easy)

B. Equipment:to be used for the judging. To be brought down by myself
i. Scales
ii. Bunnings shopping basket (borrowed from Bunnings)
iii. Grading determined by determining collective weight of all participants cooking utensils, food and ingredients used to prepare the meal, divided by the number of participants and then graded up or down from the average. With a grading out of 5 points and less weight getting more points
iv. Volume determined by fitting above items, into a Bunnings shopping basket collective volume exceeding the level of the Bunnings shopping baskets volume , getting less points and less in the basket getting more points.
v. I will have a notebook with a individual page for each participant for recording all individual participants scores that will be used to tally up points. I will list all participants when they register for the event during the next few weeks in this note book. Points will be allocated for early registrants decreasing getting closer to the event.
vi. I will be bringing the ute down with club banners, icebox for drinks, the prizes a generator for lighting , lights and some portable tables and chairs. I will remain on site from when I arrive to sign in participants.
vii. Members to bring camping gear, dickhead light, grog, chair a good attitude :P and your partner on the bike or separately in a car. Extra 5 points will be allocated if you bring your partner on the back of your bike
2. FOOD PREPARATION
A. PROCEDURE:
All food ingredients, cooking equipment, stoves , drinks etc must be carried on participants motorcycles and must have been weighed and volume measured at registration. It is up to the participant to make sure that they have had this done or they will not be eligible to enter the competition.
B. JUDGING
We will have a number of judges moving around the various food preparers.
They will be allocating up to 5 points for each of the following:
I. Time from start of cooking to finishing the preparation. Less time more points. Maximum cooking time will be 30 minutes.
II. Balanced nutrition-Protein, carbs, vegs in natural states will gain higher scores as fresh food. Anaconda pre prepared dehydrated food will not score as high a score.
III. The innovatory creation methods used by the participant will be scored with hygine, simplicity cooking smells and appearance also being given scores towards the competition. The tidiness of the cooking stove surrounds and preparatory equipment will also be scored.
IV. Participants will be presenting their meal before the judges with points given to the quickest prepared meals.
V. Partners should not interfere with the competitors food preparation and if they wish to eat keep in mind the "weigh in point scoring" criteria. Maybe let the cook get their meal out first or sacrifice a few points and just make heaps of food :P we may allocate extra points for multiple meal preparation from your ingredients.
VI. Final presentation of their food and the participants description of their preparation and their explanation as to why they think their food should be given a prize will be analysed by the judges and scored at a judgmental board following the finish up time.
C. PRIZES:
1. There will be 3 prize levels with additional prizes if we get reasonable prize sponsorships
2. The prize winners will be forever listed in the annuals of the BMWMCCWA for posterity

Registration to participate in the club cook-off can now be entered by going to the private forum webpage opening the events thread and going to the registration link. Fill out required details on this link, pay your$10 entry fee for the campsite charges and you are on your way to start earning points towards being the cook-off champion for 2016

We would like those coming to register early so we can try and get a good idea of the amount of area of the camping ground needed to accomodate us all as a group. There is no point trying to get an area for 40 members if only a dozen or so will be attending.
The problem with the camp ground is that it is quite popular and can get a bit crowded on weekends.
We are trying to encourage members to be aware of this and this is why we are going down this path and also trying to organise early turn ups at the site.
So please help the organisers with this so we can have our group together rather than all over the campgrounds.
Also keep in mind once we have put our tents up in the designated area early on in the day, if there are a lot of us as a big group , the mums and dad campers turning up won't feel inclined to set up amongst our group and will camp away from our group.
As the organisers will remain at the camp area, if those arriving early wish to leave to explore the National Park via the many walking paths or roads thru the park, they can leave their set up tent with the knowledge that there will be someone keeping an eye on their property.
Check out the park web site for things to look out and do down there.
Wine o'clock will probably start at about 1600, so you should plan to be back by then if not earlier :P

HOW TO EARN POINTS TO WIN

As mentioned we will be allocating points for a number of criteria.......
1...... Early registration 5-1 points
2......Overall distance travelled from home to destination. 1-5 points
3.......Distance travelled on dirt roads. 1-5 points
4........Pillion passenger on bike. 5 points
5....... Time arrived at campsite from 1200hrs. 5-1 points
6........Collective weight of food and all cooking utensils.Lightest 5-1points.
7........Volume of above. Less. 5-1points
8.......Timings logging on/off preparing and presenting meal. Quickest 5-1 points
9...... Overall analysis of the balanced nutritional score of the meal. 1-10 points
10......The wow factor of the meal. 0-5 points
11.......The cleanliness, tidiness and hygiene of the preparation 1-10 points
12....... Cooking smells and mouthwatering index associated with the preparation 1-5 points
13.......If more than 1 meal for others is created using the weighed ingredients 1-5 points
14.......Final presentation of the meal to the judges panel and the contestants explanation as to why they feel they should be a winning cook. 1-10 points
So if you add up the number of points that may be allocated out of 85 ,the winners will be determined with the highest scores.
All prizes will be announced once all sponsors have indicated their contributions to the organisers. At this stage the ones secured so far are exceptional and extremely generous

Club members Cookie and Eddy kick off the scoring with 5 points each for early registration. (BillB is not eligible to take part in the event this year as being the organiser of the event  )
As the registrar was slow being set up we now only have 5days left to register. There are 4 points up for grabs for those putting their names down by tomorrow ( Tuesday) and the points will decrease each day there after.
Motorad Garage and Mainpeak have offered some sponsorship so along with BM bikes providing generous vouchers and Autoclasic who have provided $300 vouchers which I picked up today and my dental practice, prizes will be very generous. This allows participants who are supporting this club event a greater chance of taking off a great prize as so far it's looking like registrations are not coming in with the numbers we thought were going to be.
