Not to be undone...Digger Across Australia

Postby Digger » Sun Jun 11, 2017 12:51 pm

G'Day Slackers,
I'm departing next Saturday on a ride being led by a rider from Perth Adventure Riders.

Route will include Hyden, Norseman, Eyre Bird Observatory (maybe), Old Eyre Highway, Fowlers Bay, Port Augusta, Flinders, Coober Pedy, Oodnadatta, Alice, Kings Canyon, Uluru and returning via Great Central Road. We are linking up with another rider at Port Augusta.

Probably be about 3 weeks.

SPOT will be activated from Saturday 17 June.

Watch this space.

Nice!

Save some energy for adventures later in the year.

Camped the first night on a dry lake bed at the rear of The Breakaways...there is more firewood available there than the campsites. Bloody cold night with a frost in the morning. Will have to layer up to keep warm if this continues.

Image
Lake Johnston look out on the Hyden to Norseman Road. It was soft underfoot on the lake bed so it must have been wet here not so long ago. The road was in good shape...very little dust and very little traffic.

Image
We stayed at a parking bay just west of Caiguna for the second night....not much firewood around. Used the bike as a Timber Jinker and dragged this back. It should take all night to burn thru. (The photo may be cropped depending on the mobile device you may be using).

Seems like you had another cold night.

In Bright my bike cover froze solid and made disconcerting crunching sounds as I tried to fold it. You may have the same acoustic experience packing up your tents this morning. Or it may not be able to be undone until it warms up.

Impressive use of both the drone and the tractor power of the BMW.

35 km....how hard can it be???

Image
About 22 km in and on top of the escarpment before descending onto the coastal plain with the Indian Ocean in the far distant background. There was a wildfire that swept thru here in December last year which destroyed the vegetation.

Image
10 km of sandy twin track lay ahead. 2 km in and 8 km to go. F*** that...too hard. There was another hill in front of us (difficult to see in the distant background) and I knew it was gunna cause some grief. I didn't want to become a headline so we turned back and followed the old telegraph track for 80 km to Madura. That was also challenging.

The original Eucla Telegraph Station now slowly being consumed by shifting sands...

A shot of the Great Australian Bight taken using my new acquisition...my drone. Hopefully this will give Mongrel Dog Productions another perspective in his videos.
Spectacular scenery.

Image
This is the Head of the Bight...not as spectacular and the rest of the coastline but we did see several migrating whales.

Meeting another rider in Port Augusta on Thursday before continuing toward the Flinders.

O'l mate John Eyre and his Aboriginal tracker walking from Sydney to Perth...what was he thinkin'?

So as not to discredit Bozo, maybe I should amend this Thread to read "Digger Half Way Across Australia".
From here (Port Augusta) we head north (ish) into the Flinders and beyond before heading West along Great Central Road.

Jeez Digger. Those drone pics are looking real pro.

Where are you carrying it on the bike? Tankbag or tailbag? Does it take up much space?

I have a semi trailer in support on this ride. He is carrying the beer and the drone.

(Have a look at the bag on the rear of my bike...it is a little bigger than normal).

The drone does pack down neatly but is still a little more than I would like. I guess it's the price you pay. I have had to jettison other stuff to make up for it but luxuries like food and water were always overrated anyway.

Well the drone will be safe, dunno about the beer though.

Thought you'd got a new blue tarp.

The radio takes up a bit of space! And baked beans come in smaller cans than the tinned dog stuff you like. There, space problem solved.

I can recommend a good pizza place in Coober Pedy (free beer) :)

The rider who joined us at Port Augusta is riding a Ducati 800 Scrambler...an odd looking piece of kit. An 18 inch front wheel...I'm interested how it will handle the sandy sections around Docker River.

A view of the Pound from one of the lookouts on the Bunyeroo Loop Road.

Me; looking very sad after 3 years without employment and wishing I had a job.

Will spend two nights at Wilpena Pound and smell some roses before heading to Coober Pedy in a roundabout way.
