Re: Bozo Across Australia
A simple Sunday ride today and time to get to know the nuances of the 2014 RT model better.
Headed down to the Mornington Peninsula through Hastings, Bittern and Balnaring. A stop at the Red Hill Bakery and a coffee at Merricks General Store set me up for a run up to Red Hill on the Point Leo Road followed by the coastal ride from Shoreham to Flinders. Flinders was choc a block with tourists and once I got past the slow driver keeping the road clear for me it was a blast to take the twisties to Cape Schank. Rosebud was slow traffic along the coast so up to Arthur's Seat, Red Hill, Red Hill south, Red Hill Road and Dunns Creek Road to get away from the traffic. Many beautiful tree lined roads with a lot of bends, dips and hollows. The Eagle cable car was working and it was disconcerting to be swinging around a 15 kph advisory corner with a cable car just above you.
It is amazing that with so many people on the peninsula that you can find near empty roads just away from the coast.
A very pleasant outing.

Re: Bozo Across Australia
A few iconic rides and locations today.
Heading through Ferntree Gully, Belgrave, Monbulk and Seville, I took the back way to Healesvile. It was a misty morning and some of the fern filled gullies were surreal. A coffee at Habituel before tackling the ride known as Black Spur (Healesville to Narbethong). There had been a bit of wind and rain so there was detritus on the roads but still a great ride.
Through Buxton (the place with a motorcycle on the roof of the hotel) to Eildon. I had driven a recently sealed road...the Eildon Jamieson Road....in my car last year and was keen to experience it on a motorbike. Little traffic (passed one 4wd going the same way as me and two cars in the opposite direction) and bend after bend. Massive climbs and great scenery made for a memorable ride.
Time for a bakery, so I called into Mansfield, then off to Mount Buller. They wanted a ridiculous fee for a motorbike and there was no guarantee I would get to the village last time I tried to visit. This time it was free and the roads were the best I have experienced for a ski resort. Again no traffic, a little cool, but I had the heated grips and seat working on the RT. The views from the top were amazing. The RT handled the loose shale on the ride to Bonza Lift for a photo opportunity at 1660 metres.
The ride down was like a slalom. Headed back to Melbourne via Yark, Yea and Yarra Glen. "Y" you ask...because you pass through the northern side of the Yarra Valley and the vistas of vineyards and hills.
Over 540 km making nearly 2,000 km in 5 days. Will sort a new rear tyre tomorrow as the fitted one has now done nearly 16,000 km.....a Roadtec 01. Will fit the same again.

Re: Bozo Across Australia
A mixed day including a trip to BMW Southbank and a new rear tyre at Geelong.
Did a short stretch of the Great Ocean Road to the Split Point Lighthouse passing through Bells Beach, Torquay and Anglesea. It was a fine day it was easy to get caught in a string of slow moving traffic and lose the joy of the bends and scenery. A strategic stop and finding a long gap restored the freedom of the open road for a few kilometres.

Bozo, Are you heading home this week or waiting for the wet weather to subside on the Nullarbor?

Re: Bozo Across Australia
Had another window to do a trip so headed up to Exmouth on a 3,200 km journey over 5 days.
A lot of contrasts in climate and culture in a short time.
The statistics were:
- 4 wedge tailed eagles
- 2 dingos
- 3 kangaroos
- 300 goats
- 2 emus
and three chunky steak pies.
Highlights were getting into Shotfire Canyon and Charles Knife Canyon Drive near Exmouth.
I will post up some additional photos in the next few days.

Re: Bozo Across Australia
Shothole Canyon was a real surprise. Even though it is a short ride (13 km) on rough track it reminded me of the Flinders Ranges. Particularly where the road and the creek are the same.
Looking back from the end of the Canyon

Re: Bozo Across Australia
Back on the road again heading towards Karajini. Currently at Newman after having visited the impressive Walga Rock. A lot of controversy about a sailing ship image that could have been added only 100 years ago. Had to remove my hugger after the top bolt retaining bracket sheared off. Minor drama easily fixed and as Digger would say “you should have taken it off before you set out”.

Re: Bozo Across Australia
Magic scenery today heading north west from Newman including Munjina Gorge. Auski has not got less dusty and my first incursion into Karijini was thwarted as the road through Yampire Gorge was closed and very twin track. Wittenoom looks a bit sorry but I got a pleasant surprise spotting fresh Sturt Pea in Wittenoom Gorge. Rough gravel from A bit before Wittenoom to Hammersley Gorge. Popped in to the pool at Hammersley Gorge but did not descend for a swim. Enjoyed the return to bitumen 26 km north of Tom Price. The town hotel in Tom Price sounded like they were holding a music festival but it was just a football mad Monday for the local Eagles team. Off to see the southern parts of Karijini tomorrow.

Re: Bozo Across Australia
Bozo sounds like a great trip with good weather, better than the cold and rain down here and further south where Mei and I have returned from. Stay upright and keep the great commentary and photos coming please.

Re: Bozo Across Australia
Completed the second half of the lap around Karajini today. Really great day and managed to rip around the park on the GSA without any drama. There were some soft and rough bits but very little traffic and I could choose any part of the road. Surprised no Telstra reception at the Eco Village. No other motorcyclists spotted at any time today but did almost run into a whacking great emu that changed direction and came straight at me (a curse placed on me by Swampy must still be working). No roos, a few wedgies and a skink/gecko. I was worried about fuel consumption being a little aggressive in the gravel but it was better than I get on bitumen. A quick commute to Port Hedland before deciding my next move.
