Paul Keller Memorial Ride Thursday 02 May 2019

Post by Swampy »

A suggestion by John Wightman that this Thursday's ride be dedicated to Paul Keller's memory struck a chord with me so I am dedicating this ride to Paul.

To those who may be interested in a Thursday ride this week, I am picking up a set of Michelin Pilot 5 boots for Harry tomorrow and will need to scrub them in!!

Meet at the Dome in Mundaring at 0900hrs for a coffee before departing for destinations unknown.

Make the most of the beautiful Autumn weather before Winter sets in and join us on German Paul's Memorial Ride

Of rugged mountain ranges, of droughts and flooding rains.
I love her far horizons, I love her jeweled sea.
Her beauty and her terror, the wide brown land for me."

Thank You to all the guys that managed to attend Paul's Memorial Ride today. I know that many more who would have liked to attend had other commitments (work etc ) but we had a good turnout all the same.

On what was a rather chilly morning 10 riders gathered for a warming coffee in Mundaring. Pete, Brian/5, Drew, Steve, Chris G, Beemer Dave on a brand new RNinety Racer, Mark 1, Mark 2 with John W also attending.

I had requested that Peter make up an interesting ride on Paul's memory and he came up with a good run planned out. I can't remember all the roads however we wound our way over to O'Brian Road then onto Toodyay road for a while before turning off onto a minor twister with plenty of ups and downs which Paul would have loved.

Unfortunately one of our riders miscalculated his fuel and came to a sudden stop twenty ks out of Toodyay in the middle of nowhere!!
The main mob disapeared over the hills but John W and I stopped to assist. A litre bottle of water was quickly dispatched down the riders throat and John took off for Toodyay while I waited to keep the rather embarrassed chap company.

Pete's plan was to pass thru Toodyay and head for the Bindoon Bakkehouse, a favourite stop for Paul but because of the fuel mishap he called a halt at the Coke Cafe while John picked up fuel up and returned to get our unfortunate rider back on the road.

It was an excellent stop Pete, well done as the guys refreshed themselves and waited for us to catch up.

With our rider refueled we all took to the Bindoon/Toodyay road and eventually pulled into the Bakkehouse for Deserts and more coffee.

John W left early as he had commitments elsewhere and was running late. The rest of us headed for the Chittering Valley and that's where I parted company with the group who were returning to Perth on The Great Northern Hwy while I took Julimar Rd. back to Toodyay, onto Clackline , slabbed it on Great Eastern Hwy to Mundaring and home via Mundaring Wier. Home at 1600hrs after a near perfect day out.

A suggestion was made to me and if the Club Committee are agreeable that we have an Annual Memorial Run for Paul on the FIRST THURSDAY of MAY every year??

Thank you Pete for leading an excellent ride and thank you guys for participating and the good humoured company today.

PS. Hopefully John W can post some pics??

Thanks Swampy for a complete ride report. Yes it was a ride which I think Paul would have enjoyed. Thanks to John W and Swampy for assisting Mark with his lack of go juice problem. Helping others is a BMWMCCWA tradition, which is fantastic. Thanks to all that made it a special day and especially Swampy for TEC duties.

Yes, great ride guys, with a good turnout. Paul would have approved. Thanks to Peter for such a colourful selection of route and for Swampy for keeping the chooks more or less pointing north, all the time. I posted some pictures on facebook which are worth seeing. I'll recommend to the Committee that we reserve the early May run in memory of Paul.
